Chapter 1 - The Opulent Divide

The Grand Atrium of the Waldorf was a blinding spectacle of wealth and legacy. Massive crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, casting a warm, golden glow over the ballroom. Below, the city’s elite mingled around candlelit tables, clad in bespoke tuxedos and flowing evening gowns. It was a world of hushed conversations, clinking champagne flutes, and hidden daggers.
Standing near the edge of the dance floor was Maya. At twenty-two, she was the youngest board member ever appointed to the Sterling Foundation, an achievement earned through pure brilliance and relentless hard work in software engineering. She wore a simple yet elegant lilac satin dress, capped at the sleeves, with a delicate bow tied at the small of her back. She looked serene, nursing a sparkling water, but her dark eyes took in every detail of the room. She knew exactly how precarious her position was.
Across the room stood Eleanor Vance. Draped in heavy, gray velvet that swept the marble floor, Eleanor looked every bit the matriarch she believed herself to be. Diamonds glittered at her ears and throat, but they did little to soften the harsh, bitter lines of her face. Eleanor had spent decades gatekeeping the foundation’s inner circle, ensuring only the "right" kind of people—those with old money and inherited power—were allowed entry. To her, Maya was an interloper, a street-smart scholarship kid who had somehow tricked her way into the sanctuary of the elite.

Eleanor’s eyes locked onto Maya from across the ballroom. The older woman’s glare was a mixture of absolute disgust and simmering hostility. Maya didn't look away. She simply offered a polite, imperceptible nod, her face a stoic mask.
Maya knew Eleanor was planning something tonight. The whispers had reached her days ago. The old guard wanted her out, and Eleanor was willing to cross any moral line to make it happen. What Eleanor didn't know was that Maya had spent her entire life outsmarting bullies who underestimated her.
