Chapter 4 - Gravity's Hold

The silence in the ballroom was absolute, heavy with the collective held breath of three hundred elite guests. Eleanor’s chest heaved. The sheer, immovable force of Maya’s calm gaze acted as a mirror, reflecting all of Eleanor's deepest insecurities and petty malice right back at her.

Suddenly, the older woman's eyes rolled back. The adrenaline that had fueled her vitriolic outburst vanished, leaving behind a profound physiological shock. Eleanor’s knees buckled. Like a felled statue, she collapsed, falling flat onto her back against the polished marble floor.

The crowd erupted. A collective, theatrical gasp echoed through the cavernous space. The woman in the stunning red halter dress immediately covered her mouth in shock, taking a frightened step backward. Beside her, the bearded man in the sharply tailored tuxedo stared in utter disbelief, his champagne glass frozen mid-air.

Through the sudden chaos, as people murmured and shifted anxiously, Maya did not flinch. She did not take a step back, nor did she rush forward to offer false sympathy. She remained rooted to her spot, an island of serenity in a sea of aristocratic panic. She knew Eleanor wasn't in mortal danger; it was a simple fainting spell triggered by a panic attack. The real danger, Maya knew, was what was supposed to happen next.
