Chapter 2 - The Digital Failsafe

An hour earlier, the evening had been relatively quiet. Maya had slipped away from the main hall to touch up her makeup in the grand powder room. As she exited, her keen eyes caught a reflection in the hallway mirror.
It was Eleanor, standing near the VIP cloakroom. The older woman was looking around frantically, her hands trembling slightly. Maya stepped back into the shadows, watching intently. She saw Eleanor pull a heavy, gleaming gold watch—an antique piece slated for the evening’s charity auction—from her velvet clutch. With practiced speed, Eleanor slipped the priceless watch into the pocket of Maya’s lightweight wool coat, which was hanging on the rack.
A lesser person might have panicked, rushed forward, and caused a scene. But Maya was a systems architect; she didn't react to bugs, she patched them. She felt a brief pang of sorrow—not for herself, but for Eleanor. It was profoundly sad that a woman with so much privilege felt the need to destroy a young girl’s life just to protect her own ego.
Without making a sound, Maya retreated to a quiet alcove. She pulled her smartphone from her hidden dress pocket. As the chief security consultant for the venue's tech upgrade the previous year, she still had backdoor access to the building's internal network. Her fingers flew across the digital keyboard. Within seconds, she bypassed the firewall, tapped into the hallway’s high-definition security camera, and isolated the exact timestamp of Eleanor’s crime.

She downloaded the black-and-white footage directly to her phone and linked it to the ballroom's massive audiovisual projection system. She coded a simple trigger widget on her home screen. One tap, and the truth would be broadcast to the entire room.
Maya took a deep breath, smoothing her lilac satin skirt. She walked back into the ballroom, entirely at peace. The trap was set, but it wasn't hers.
