Chapter 11 - The Morning After

The sun rose over the Manhattan skyline, casting sharp, brilliant rays across Maya’s minimalist apartment. By 7:00 AM, the city was already buzzing, and so was her phone. The morning tabloids and digital news outlets had wasted no time. “High Society Heist: Matriarch’s Midnight Misdeeds,” read one digital headline. Another featured a pixelated screenshot of Eleanor’s face, frozen in that moment of ultimate terror, plastered across the front page.

Sitting at her kitchen island with a mug of black coffee, Maya scrolled past the sensationalism. She felt no joy in seeing an older woman’s life dismantled for public consumption, even if it was entirely self-inflicted. Gossip was a currency Maya had never cared to trade in.

Instead, she opened a blank document on her laptop. Chairman Harrison had formally requested she lead the new ethics committee, but Maya knew that policing behavior wasn't enough to fix the Sterling Foundation. The organization needed a structural overhaul. It was built on exclusivity, hoarding wealth to fund extravagant galas while tossing spare change to actual causes.

Maya’s fingers flew across the keyboard, the rhythmic clacking filling the quiet apartment. She began drafting a proposal to divert forty percent of the foundation’s annual gala budget directly into a new venture: an incubator for underprivileged youth in STEM. If she was going to stay in this world of old money, she was going to use it to open doors for kids who looked like her.
