Chapter 3 - The Boiling Point

The orchestra transitioned to a slow, sweeping waltz, but the atmosphere near the center of the room was rapidly freezing over. Eleanor, fueled by a dangerous cocktail of arrogance and champagne, marched directly toward Maya.
The older woman didn't care who was watching. The guests nearby parted like the Red Sea, sensing the incoming storm. A bearded man in a sharply tailored tuxedo paused mid-sentence, turning his head. A woman in a stunning red halter dress lowered her glass, her eyes wide with anticipation.
Eleanor stopped mere inches from Maya, invading her personal space with aggressive hostility. Her chest heaved, and the diamonds at her ears shook violently as she pointed a manicured, trembling finger directly into Maya’s face.
"You think you belong here?" Eleanor hissed, her voice rising above the music, loud enough to draw the attention of the surrounding tables. She leaned in closer, gesturing wildly, her face contorted with malice. "You don't deserve this! You are nothing but a fraud, hardened into lethal cold!"
Maya stood perfectly still. She didn't flinch. She didn't blink. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, framing a face of absolute, unbothered calm. She looked into Eleanor’s eyes and saw not strength, but a terrifying, desperate insecurity.

"You think you can just take what is ours?" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking as the music abruptly halted. The entire ballroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Hundreds of eyes were locked onto the two women.
Maya’s silence was deafening. It offered Eleanor no resistance, no argument to push back against. It was like screaming into a void. The sheer psychological weight of Maya’s unwavering, calculating stare hit Eleanor all at once. The older woman gasped, her hand flying to her chest as the adrenaline abruptly betrayed her.
