Chapter 14 - The Olive Branch

A week later, a thick, cream-colored envelope arrived at Maya's office. The return address belonged to a high-powered defense firm. Maya opened it carefully, expecting a threat of a defamation lawsuit.
Instead, she found a handwritten letter on personalized stationery. It wasn't from Eleanor, but from her daughter, Claire.
Dear Maya,
I am writing to apologize for my mother's actions. What she did was cruel, desperate, and inexcusable. I also want to thank you. Her lawyers informed me that you declined to press additional civil charges for emotional distress or defamation. You had every right to destroy her entirely, but you chose restraint.
This family has been poisoned by pride for generations. Seeing it catch up to her so publicly was devastating, but perhaps necessary. I wish you the best with the Foundation. You deserve your seat at the table.
May you like
Sincerely, Claire Vance.
Maya folded the letter and placed it in her desk drawer. She felt a profound wave of relief. The cycle of hostility had been broken. True victory wasn't about grinding your enemies into the dust; it was about stepping off the battlefield entirely and moving forward with grace.
