Chapter 1 - The Woman on the Marble Floor.

.The Grand Aurelia's lobby went silent so quickly that Charlotte Val could hear the chandelier crystals trembling above her.
A moment earlier, she had been crossing the marble floor with a beige leather handbag tucked beneath her arm.
Now she was sitting beside an overturned chair, one palm against the cold stone, while dozens of guests pretended not to stare.
Vanessa Mercer stood over her in an ivory gown, pearls bright against her throat and contempt even brighter in her eyes.
Charlotte's cheek stung where it had scraped against the edge of the chair, but she refused to touch the mark.
Vanessa pointed toward the revolving doors as if she were dismissing an employee who had failed an interview.
"Get up and leave. You don't belong here."
The words carried across the lobby.
No one laughed, but no one defended Charlotte either.
That silence told Charlotte more about the Grand Aurelia than any inspection report ever could.
She had arrived without assistants, security, or a formal announcement because she wanted to see the hotel exactly as ordinary people saw it.
For three months, anonymous complaints had described a culture of favoritism, intimidation, and special treatment for people connected to the Mercer family.
Charlotte had expected arrogance.
She had not expected it to find her before she reached the front desk.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Did you hear me?"
Charlotte slowly lifted her eyes.
The fear Vanessa expected was no longer there.
"Are you sure you want me to leave?"
Vanessa gave a short, humorless smile.
"Completely sure."
Charlotte reached for her handbag.
Several guests leaned forward, expecting her to gather her belongings and disappear.
Instead, she opened the bag and removed a dark leather folder.
The gold hotel seal flashed beneath the chandelier light.
Vanessa's smile faltered for less than a second, then returned.
"A folder doesn't make you important."
Charlotte opened it just enough to reveal the heading stamped across the first page.
DEED OF OWNERSHIP.
At that exact moment, Daniel Reed, the hotel's general manager, hurried from the reception corridor.
He had been called because a guest disturbance was blocking the center of the lobby.
Then he saw the woman on the floor.
His steps stopped.
The color left his face.
"Charlotte Val?"
Every head in the lobby turned toward him.
Vanessa looked from Daniel to Charlotte, suddenly less certain.
Charlotte stood slowly and brushed a faint streak of dust from her dark trousers.
She did not raise her voice.
"This hotel belongs to me."
The sentence landed harder than a shout.
Daniel straightened instinctively.
Vanessa stared at the folder as though the paper itself had betrayed her.
Then she recovered and laughed once.
"That's impossible."
Charlotte closed the folder.
"You may want to be very careful with that word."
Daniel stepped closer and lowered his voice.
"Ms. Val, we were told you wouldn't arrive until next month."
Charlotte's gaze sharpened.
"Who told you that?"
Daniel opened his mouth, but Vanessa answered first.
"My father did."
That was the moment Charlotte understood the scene in the lobby was not simply bad behavior.
Someone had known enough about her arrival to lie about it.
And as the elevator doors opened behind Vanessa, an older man in a charcoal suit stepped into the lobby and looked directly at Charlotte's folder.
He did not look surprised to see her.
May you like
He looked disappointed that she was still holding it.
"Charlotte," Adrian Mercer said quietly, "we need to talk before you make a very expensive mistake."
