Chapter 7 - The Sale Scheduled for Morning.

.The purchase agreement was scheduled to be signed at nine o'clock the next morning.
Charlotte read every page while the city outside the conference-room windows turned from black to dark blue.
The buyer was Bellweather Hospitality Partners, a private company registered six months earlier.
The purchase price was less than half the Grand Aurelia's independent valuation.
Daniel looked physically ill.
"If this had closed, the hotel would have been transferred before most employees even knew it was for sale."
Charlotte turned to the signature page.
Adrian Mercer was listed as authorized representative of the ownership trust.
He had never held that authority.
Vanessa paced near the windows.
"He wouldn't be stupid enough to sign something he couldn't legally sign."
Charlotte looked at her.
"He doesn't need the signature to be valid forever."
"What does that mean?"
"He only needs enough confusion to move money, trigger a dispute, and pressure the trust into a settlement."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"And if the hotel looks insolvent, the board can argue an emergency sale protects creditors."
Vanessa stopped pacing.
"So the fake losses create the emergency."
Charlotte closed the agreement.
"Exactly."
The conference-room door opened.
Adrian entered with Graham Voss and two attorneys.
He looked rested, which meant he had not spent the previous hour worrying.
He had spent it preparing.
"This meeting is over," Adrian said.
Charlotte remained seated.
"No."
One attorney placed a document in front of her.
"Ms. Val, the advisory board has called an emergency session for eight a.m."
Charlotte read the notice.
The board intended to challenge her authority under a clause in the Val family trust.
If an ownership transition created a material threat to operations, the advisory board could temporarily suspend extraordinary actions for seventy-two hours.
Vanessa looked at her father.
"You're using the emergency clause?"
Adrian did not look at her.
"The hotel needs stability."
Charlotte almost admired the audacity.
He had spent months manufacturing instability and was now trying to use it against her.
"You called the meeting before you knew I found the sale agreement."
Adrian's expression remained smooth.
"I called it after you disrupted the lobby and seized security systems."
Charlotte leaned back.
"You mean after your daughter tried to throw the owner out of her own hotel."
Graham spoke for the first time.
"The board is concerned about your judgment."
Vanessa stared at him.
"She has been here six hours."
Graham's tone was cold.
"Six destructive hours."
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
"How many board members?"
"Nine voting members."
"How many does Adrian control?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Usually six."
Adrian smiled.
"You can bring your folder if it makes you feel better."
Charlotte stood.
She was exhausted, but the exhaustion had burned into focus.
"I will."
Adrian turned toward the door.
"Good."
Charlotte added one more sentence.
"And I'll bring the ledger."
For the first time, Graham Voss lost his composure.
His head snapped toward her.
It was small, fast, and unmistakable.
Charlotte saw it.
So did Vanessa.
As Adrian and Graham left, Vanessa waited until the door closed.
Then she walked to Charlotte and lowered her voice.
"Graham knew about that ledger."
Charlotte nodded.
Vanessa looked toward the corridor where her father had disappeared.
"I think my father is lying to me too."
May you like
Charlotte picked up the ownership folder.
"Then eight o'clock is going to be uncomfortable for both of us."
