Chapter 12 - The Brother Behind the Invoices.

.Graham Voss did not make it to the boardroom door.

Two board members stepped into the aisle and told him to sit down.

They were no longer following Adrian's lead.

They were protecting themselves from being associated with him.

On the speakerphone, Miles explained what he had discovered.

Grant Voss controlled four of the shell vendors that had billed the Grand Aurelia for nonexistent consulting work.

Money from those vendors moved through Mercer Capital affiliates and eventually funded Bellweather Hospitality Partners.

The hotel had effectively been paying for the company designed to buy it cheaply.

Daniel stared at Graham.

"You used Grand Aurelia money to finance the acquisition."

Graham's face flushed.

"That is not what happened."

Miles answered from the phone.

"The bank records say otherwise."

Adrian stood.

"Anything obtained unlawfully will be challenged."

Charlotte looked at him.

"You're discussing admissibility before anyone has accused you of a crime."

Adrian stopped speaking.

That silence mattered.

Vanessa sat at the far end of the table, staring at her father as if seeing a stranger wearing a familiar face.

Marcus reported that Grant had arrived to retrieve the boxes but backed away once he saw security present.

He left without taking anything.

Charlotte instructed Marcus to secure the van and bring the records back through documented chain of custody.

Graham laughed bitterly.

"You think some invoices make you untouchable?"

Charlotte looked at him.

"No."

"Then what exactly do you think you have?"

"Time."

The word confused him.

Charlotte checked the clock.

8:56.

The Bellweather closing was four minutes away.

She opened her laptop and joined the scheduled virtual closing using the link embedded in the draft agreement.

A banker, an escrow officer, and two Bellweather attorneys appeared on screen.

Adrian stared at her.

"What are you doing?"

Charlotte turned the laptop so the board could see.

"Attending my hotel's sale."

The escrow officer asked for Adrian Mercer.

Charlotte spoke first.

"Before any funds are released, I am providing notice that the proposed seller lacks authority and that the transaction documents are disputed."

The banker immediately muted himself and began typing.

Bellweather's attorney demanded to know Charlotte's role.

She held the recorded ownership certificate toward the camera.

"Controlling owner."

The attorney stopped talking.

Adrian's composure finally cracked.

"This is reckless."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Selling property you don't own is reckless."

The escrow officer announced that the closing was suspended pending title review.

It was 8:59.

Adrian's nine o'clock plan had failed by one minute.

No one in the boardroom celebrated.

Charlotte knew the hardest part had not happened yet.

Stopping the sale prevented immediate damage.

It did not prove who had engineered the scheme.

Then Vanessa's phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen and went completely still.

"What is it?" Charlotte asked.

Vanessa turned the phone around.

A scheduled email had just arrived from Harold Val's private account.

The subject line read: IF CHARLOTTE HAS TAKEN CONTROL, OPEN THIS WITH HER.

Charlotte could barely breathe.

Her father had scheduled the message before he died.
