Chapter 10 - What Harold Val Knew.

.Charlotte called the blocked number back three times, but it would not connect.

She returned to Room 2417 and shut the door.

Vanessa, Daniel, and Marcus waited for her to speak.

"Miles says my father sealed the audit to protect me."

Daniel looked confused.

"Protect you from what?"

Charlotte did not know.

That uncertainty bothered her more than Adrian's threats.

For years, Harold Val had kept Charlotte away from the hotel's board politics.

He told her to build her own career, learn the business elsewhere, and return only when she wanted the responsibility rather than the title.

Charlotte had resented him for it.

Now she wondered whether distance had been a shield.

Daniel sat at the desk and looked through the remaining stationery.

One sheet had been pressed beneath whatever Miles had written earlier.

The pressure marks were faint.

Marcus brought a desk lamp sideways across the page.

Indented handwriting became visible.

H.V. knew about Bellweather.

Vanessa read over his shoulder.

"Your father knew about the buyer."

Charlotte nodded.

"But maybe not the real owners."

Marcus searched the state business registry from the isolated laptop.

Bellweather Hospitality Partners listed a registered agent and two holding companies.

The holding companies led to another corporation.

That corporation led back to a private family office.

Vanessa stopped breathing for a second.

"Mercer Capital."

Her father's company.

The room went quiet.

Adrian had arranged to sell the Grand Aurelia to a company he secretly controlled.

The hotel would appear to fail, the trust would receive a depressed price, and Adrian would acquire the property through a hidden buyer.

Daniel whispered, "He was buying it from himself."

Charlotte corrected him.

"He was trying to buy it from us."

A message arrived from the board secretary.

The recess would end in ten minutes.

Charlotte gathered the papers.

Vanessa did not move.

"If I walk back into that room with you, I'm finished with my father."

Charlotte looked at her.

"That decision is yours."

"After what happened in the lobby, why would you even let me help?"

Charlotte answered without softness.

"Helping now doesn't erase what you did."

Vanessa looked down.

"I know."

"But the truth doesn't become less useful because it comes from someone who behaved badly."

Vanessa nodded once.

They returned to the boardroom.

Adrian was already seated.

He looked at his daughter beside Charlotte and understood immediately.

Graham called the meeting back to order.

Charlotte placed the Bellweather ownership chain on the table.

"Before you vote, every board member should know who the proposed buyer really is."

The papers moved from hand to hand.

One member whispered an angry curse.

Another pushed the purchase agreement away as though it were contaminated.

Adrian remained still.

"Corporate structures are complicated."

Charlotte looked at him.

"This one isn't."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Bellweather belongs to Mercer Capital."

Adrian finally looked at her.

"Go home."

Vanessa's face tightened.

"No."

The word was simple, but it broke something between them.

Charlotte watched Adrian reach beneath the table and send a message on his phone.

Marcus's phone buzzed almost immediately.

He checked it and looked at Charlotte.

"We have another problem."

"What now?"

"Someone just used an executive override to open the archive loading bay at the Queens laundry facility."

Charlotte looked at the clock.

8:41 a.m.

The sale was scheduled for nine.

Someone was moving the original records right now.
