Chapter 2 - The Man Who Wasn't Surprised.

.Adrian Mercer crossed the lobby with the calm confidence of a man who had spent years acting as though the hotel already belonged to him.

He was chairman of the Grand Aurelia's advisory board, a longtime investor, and Vanessa's father.

He was also the person Charlotte's late mother had once described as useful only when watched carefully.

Charlotte had never forgotten that sentence.

Adrian glanced at the faint scratch on Charlotte's cheek, then at his daughter.

He did not ask what had happened.

That omission felt deliberate.

"We should discuss this upstairs," he said.

Charlotte kept the ownership folder in her hand.

"We can start right here."

Vanessa's face hardened.

"Dad, she walked in here looking like she was trying to cause trouble."

Charlotte turned toward her.

"I walked through the front door."

Daniel Reed lowered his eyes, clearly wishing the marble floor would open beneath him.

Adrian gave Vanessa a warning look, but it contained frustration rather than concern.

"There has been a misunderstanding."

Charlotte almost smiled.

"A misunderstanding requires two people to misunderstand the same thing."

She looked directly at Vanessa.

"She understood exactly what she was doing."

Several guests quietly lifted their phones, but Charlotte raised one hand.

"Please don't record the staff or other guests."

Her request was calm, and most of the phones lowered.

Vanessa stared at her, irritated that Charlotte could control the room without demanding it.

Adrian changed tactics.

"That deed is part of an incomplete transfer."

Daniel looked sharply at him.

Charlotte noticed.

"Interesting."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"The board still has to certify several conditions."

"The transfer closed eleven days ago."

"Not according to our counsel."

"Your counsel isn't my counsel."

Charlotte removed a second document from the folder and handed it to Daniel.

It was the recorded transfer certificate bearing the county stamp and the signatures of the trust administrators.

Daniel read it twice.

His expression shifted from alarm to something closer to dread.

"This is final," he said.

Vanessa turned on him.

"Daniel, think very carefully before you say another word."

Charlotte heard the threat hidden inside the polished sentence.

So did Daniel.

He handed the document back to Charlotte with both hands.

"It is final."

Adrian's pleasant expression disappeared.

"Then congratulations."

The words sounded like an insult wrapped in gift paper.

Charlotte slipped the document back into the folder.

"Thank you."

"But ownership does not give you the right to disrupt operations without notice."

Charlotte looked around the lobby.

"I wasn't the disruption."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You came here dressed like nobody and expected everyone to recognize you."

Daniel visibly flinched.

Charlotte's voice became quieter.

"That's exactly why I came dressed like nobody."

No one answered.

She turned to Daniel.

"I want the lobby security footage preserved immediately."

Daniel nodded.

"Of course."

Adrian interrupted.

"That is unnecessary."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Then it should be very easy."

Daniel reached for his radio.

Before he could speak, the hotel's security director appeared from a side corridor with a nervous expression.

"Mr. Reed, we have a problem."

Daniel frowned.

"What problem?"

The director looked at Charlotte, then at Adrian.

"The lobby cameras stopped recording twenty minutes ago."

Charlotte felt the room change again.

The timing was too clean.

She looked at Adrian.

This time, his surprise arrived half a second too late.

"That's unfortunate," he said.

Charlotte closed the folder against her chest.

May you like

"No," she replied.

"That's evidence."
