Chapter 9 - The Witness Who Had Disappeared.

.No one in the boardroom spoke for several seconds after Charlotte read Miles Hale's name aloud.
Daniel was the first to break the silence.
"That's impossible."
Graham Voss pushed back from the table.
"A witness name proves nothing."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Five minutes ago, you wanted this document counted as a valid proxy."
Graham stopped moving.
Vanessa walked closer and read the signature line herself.
"Miles was in the lobby last night."
Adrian's voice became flat.
"Allegedly."
Charlotte turned to the board secretary.
"Where did this proxy come from?"
The secretary looked terrified.
"It was delivered by courier at seven fifteen."
"To whom?"
"Mr. Voss."
Every eye moved toward Graham.
He stood.
"I receive documents for the board every day."
Charlotte nodded.
"Then you won't mind giving Marcus the courier envelope."
Graham said nothing.
The emergency vote could not proceed until the proxy was verified.
Charlotte requested a thirty-minute recess.
Adrian objected.
Three board members who had initially supported him now voted for the recess.
The balance was shifting.
In the hallway, Vanessa caught Charlotte by the elevator.
"I know where Miles might be."
Charlotte studied her.
"Since when?"
"Since about thirty seconds ago."
Vanessa showed her a message that had appeared on her recovered phone when it reconnected to the network.
It contained only a room number.
2417.
Daniel frowned.
"That suite is closed for renovation."
Charlotte looked at Marcus.
"Who accessed it?"
Marcus checked the electronic lock system.
The last entry had occurred at 7:03 that morning using a temporary contractor key.
They went upstairs together.
Room 2417 was at the end of a quiet corridor covered in protective floor runners.
Daniel knocked.
No answer.
Marcus opened the door with the master key.
The suite was empty.
A coffee cup was still warm on the desk.
A laptop charger was plugged into the wall, but the computer was gone.
Charlotte noticed a stack of hotel stationery beneath the lamp.
The top page contained three handwritten words.
CHECK THE LAUNDRY.
Vanessa stared at it.
"Is this some kind of game?"
Charlotte walked toward the bedroom.
The closet door was open.
Inside hung a gray maintenance uniform identical to the one Miles had worn in the lobby footage.
Daniel checked the pockets.
He found a folded shipping receipt.
The destination was the Grand Aurelia's commercial laundry facility in Queens.
The shipped item was listed as archived fabric samples.
Weight: forty-eight pounds.
Charlotte thought of the missing vendor binders.
"Those weren't fabric samples."
Marcus called hotel security at the laundry facility.
No one answered.
Daniel tried the facility manager.
Voicemail.
Vanessa looked at Charlotte.
"If the original invoices are there, somebody is trying to move them before the board can see them."
Charlotte was already walking toward the door.
Then her phone rang.
The number was blocked.
She answered.
A man's voice spoke quietly.
"Ms. Val, don't go to the laundry facility."
Charlotte stopped.
"Miles?"
The line went silent for a beat.
"Your father did not seal the audit to protect Adrian."
Charlotte gripped the phone.
"Then why did he seal it?"
Miles answered with seven words that changed the direction of everything.
May you like
"Because he was trying to protect you."
The call ended.
