Chapter 4 - The Backup Nobody Remembered.

.Emergency lights flickered on, washing the security room in a dim red glow.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Marcus swore under his breath and reached beneath the console for the battery unit.
Charlotte heard Vanessa inhale sharply beside her.
Adrian immediately moved toward the door.
"This building has a generator."
Daniel blocked his path without touching him.
"Then we can wait thirty seconds."
Adrian stared at him.
"Move."
Daniel did not.
Charlotte noticed something important in that small refusal.
Daniel Reed had been afraid of Adrian in the lobby.
Now he was more afraid of what Charlotte might discover.
The generator engaged and the monitors rebooted one by one.
Marcus returned to the disaster server.
"The transfer may have continued remotely."
The screen loaded.
The backup file was there.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"If that recording was corrupted, none of this means anything."
Marcus opened the first camera angle.
The image was grainy but clear enough.
Charlotte watched herself enter the Grand Aurelia carrying her beige bag.
She had paused near reception when a bell attendant accidentally brushed past her suitcase.
Vanessa appeared from the bar corridor less than a minute later.
At first, the confrontation looked exactly as Charlotte remembered.
Vanessa approached, demanded that she move, and grew angrier when Charlotte asked for the manager.
Then the footage revealed something Charlotte had not seen.
A man in a gray hotel uniform stood near the west staircase watching them.
He did not intervene.
He watched Charlotte's handbag.
When Vanessa stepped closer, the man touched his earpiece.
A second figure appeared near the entrance.
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
"Pause that."
Marcus froze the image.
The second figure wore housekeeping black and carried folded towels.
Daniel shook his head.
"Housekeeping doesn't use black uniforms."
Charlotte felt a cold clarity settle over her.
The argument in the lobby had drawn attention away from something else.
Marcus advanced the video frame by frame.
When Charlotte stumbled against the chair, her handbag slid nearly six feet across the marble.
The man in the fake uniform moved toward it immediately.
His hand reached down.
Then a guest stepped between him and the bag.
He changed direction and disappeared into the elevator corridor.
Charlotte looked at Vanessa.
"Your argument gave someone a chance to take my folder."
Vanessa stared at the screen.
For the first time, her outrage looked less convincing than her confusion.
"I didn't know him."
Adrian spoke too quickly.
"Of course you didn't."
Charlotte turned toward him.
"I didn't ask you."
Adrian's mouth tightened.
Marcus resumed the footage.
A final detail appeared just before the feed ended.
The fake employee passed behind Vanessa.
For one second, his face turned toward the camera.
Daniel made a sound of recognition.
"I know him."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Who is he?"
Daniel stepped back from the monitor.
"His name is Miles Hale."
"Employee?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Former employee."
Adrian suddenly looked at the floor.
Charlotte caught it.
"Why was he fired?"
Daniel's answer came slowly.
"He was our senior internal accountant."
"And?"
"He disappeared after an audit found six million dollars in unexplained vendor payments."
Charlotte looked back at the frozen image.
Miles Hale had not come to the lobby for Vanessa.
May you like
He had come for the ownership folder.
And someone inside the hotel had told him exactly when Charlotte would be carrying it.
