Chapter 13 - Harold's Last Recording.

.The boardroom lights were dimmed so everyone could see the video clearly.

Charlotte sat perfectly still as her father appeared on the screen.

Harold Val looked thinner than she remembered, but his voice was steady.

The recording date was five weeks before his death.

"Charlotte, if you're watching this, then you came back."

Charlotte swallowed hard.

No one else moved.

Harold continued.

"And if Adrian is in the room, he is probably telling you I misunderstood him."

Every eye turned toward Adrian.

He stared at the screen with no expression.

The video changed to a second clip recorded by a hidden camera in Harold's study.

Adrian sat across from him.

Their conversation was quiet but clear.

Adrian argued that the hotel was declining and needed a fast sale.

Harold challenged the financial projections.

Adrian said the board could force an emergency process if necessary.

Then Harold asked one direct question.

"Does Bellweather belong to you?"

On the recording, Adrian did not answer.

He stood and left.

The video returned to Harold speaking alone.

"Silence was his answer."

Charlotte felt grief and anger twist together, but she kept her eyes on the screen.

Harold explained that he had asked Miles to trace the vendor payments quietly.

He had also learned that Graham and Grant Voss were connected to several shell companies.

But he had not yet found enough proof to remove them without triggering a legal battle that could freeze the hotel for years.

So he changed the trust.

Charlotte leaned forward.

Harold looked almost directly at her through the camera.

"I transferred control to you because Adrian believes you are unprepared."

A faint smile crossed Harold's face.

"He has always confused quiet with weak."

Vanessa glanced toward Charlotte.

Harold's final instructions were precise.

A sealed amendment had been placed with Eleanor Val's personal attorney.

If the board attempted to invoke the emergency clause using a disputed proxy, Eleanor's voting rights automatically reverted to the controlling beneficiary.

Charlotte.

Graham stood.

"That is not enforceable."

One of the board attorneys shook his head slowly.

"It may be."

Adrian turned on him.

"May be?"

The attorney opened the trust document.

"The amendment is referenced here."

Charlotte finally understood why Eleanor had texted her not to let them use the proxy.

Her grandmother knew the trap.

The empty chair had never been a weakness.

It was the trigger.

The board secretary received an email from Eleanor's attorney moments later.

The amendment was attached with notarized signatures and filing confirmation.

The emergency vote collapsed immediately.

Without Eleanor's proxy, Adrian had only four reliable votes.

With the amendment, Charlotte now controlled Eleanor's block as well.

Graham looked toward the door.

Daniel moved between him and the exit.

"You can leave after the meeting is closed."

Charlotte did not smile.

She looked at Adrian.

"You spent months trying to create a crisis."

Adrian finally spoke.

"And you think one recording makes you capable of running this place?"

Charlotte closed her father's video.

"No."

She slid the vendor ledger to the center of the table.

"This does."

Then Vanessa stood.

Everyone looked at her.

She placed her own phone beside the ledger.

"I have one more thing."

Adrian's face changed.

Vanessa opened a message thread between herself and her father.

May you like

The last message had been sent yesterday afternoon.

It read: KEEP CHARLOTTE IN THE LOBBY UNTIL I TELL YOU OTHERWISE.
