Chapter 5 - The Six Million Dollar Shadow.

.Charlotte moved the investigation to the executive conference room before midnight.

The Grand Aurelia continued operating around them, but the mood behind the locked glass doors had changed completely.

Daniel brought the vendor audit that had triggered Miles Hale's departure eight months earlier.

Marcus brought access logs.

Adrian brought objections.

Vanessa brought silence.

Charlotte spread the documents across the table.

The missing six million dollars had not vanished in one payment.

It had been divided into eighty-seven invoices from companies with respectable names and nearly identical billing descriptions.

Luxury linen consulting.

Guest experience strategy.

Executive transportation analysis.

The descriptions sounded legitimate because they were designed to sound boring.

Charlotte circled three vendor names.

"Who approved these?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"The board finance committee."

"Who chaired it?"

No one answered.

Charlotte looked at Adrian.

He gave a tired smile.

"You already know."

Vanessa finally spoke.

"My father didn't personally review every invoice."

Charlotte nodded.

"Neither would I."

Vanessa seemed almost relieved until Charlotte continued.

"Which is why companies use controls."

Adrian pushed back from the table.

"This is becoming theatrical."

"A former accountant appeared in my lobby wearing a fake uniform and moved toward my ownership documents."

Charlotte closed the audit binder.

"We're past theatrical."

Daniel opened another file.

"There is something else."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

Daniel ignored him.

Three months after Miles disappeared, someone had ordered the audit sealed under attorney-client privilege.

Charlotte read the authorization.

The signature belonged to the hotel's previous acting owner, Harold Val.

Her father.

For the first time that night, Charlotte felt her certainty slip.

Harold Val had died six weeks earlier after transferring his controlling interest to the family trust.

He had been stubborn, private, and sometimes impossible, but Charlotte had never believed he would hide theft.

Vanessa noticed the change in Charlotte's face.

"Maybe you don't know your own family as well as you think."

Charlotte looked up.

"Maybe none of us do."

Adrian stood.

"Your father understood that public accusations can destroy a hotel faster than bad accounting."

"Is that why he sealed it?"

"Ask him."

The cruelty of the answer was deliberate.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Charlotte did not give Adrian the reaction he wanted.

Instead, she examined the authorization more closely.

The signature looked like her father's, but the date bothered her.

Harold had been in Boston that week for surgery on an old shoulder injury and had refused to handle business paperwork.

Charlotte remembered because he had complained about being unable to sign checks with his right hand.

She turned the page over.

A notary stamp appeared at the bottom.

The notary was based in Manhattan.

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

"Was my father in New York on this date?"

"According to the board calendar, yes."

"The board calendar is wrong."

Adrian's expression hardened.

Charlotte pulled out her phone and opened an old family message thread.

There was a photograph from the same day.

Harold sat in a Boston hospital room with his right arm secured in a sling.

The timestamp was clear.

Daniel stared at the document.

"Then someone forged his signature."

Vanessa whispered, "Dad?"

Adrian looked at his daughter with an expression Charlotte could not read.

Before he could answer, Marcus entered the conference room carrying a small evidence envelope.

"We found Ms. Mercer's missing phone."

Vanessa stood immediately.

"Where?"

Marcus placed the envelope on the table.

"Inside Mr. Hale's old accounting office."

Charlotte looked toward the dark corridor beyond the glass wall.

That office had supposedly been locked for eight months.

May you like

Someone had opened it tonight.

And Vanessa's phone had been left there for them to find.
