Chapter 11 - The Motel Outside Albany.

Priya refused to let Adrian rush north without a plan.

The photograph could be bait.

Adrian agreed.

By noon, her firm had confirmed the motel existed and that the exterior matched the image.

A clerk remembered Nora Hayes because she had paid cash and asked for a room away from the parking lot.

She stayed six nights.

Then she left without saying where she was going.

The clerk also remembered another detail.

A man in a dark security-style jacket had asked about her two days later.

Priya showed the clerk photographs of several Vale employees.

He pointed to Mason Trent.

That was enough for Priya to contact outside investigators and law enforcement regarding the suspected fraud and unauthorized access.

Adrian did not control that process.

He wanted it that way.

Inside Vale Holdings, he suspended Mason's credentials and placed Richard on administrative leave pending an independent audit.

Richard responded with a letter accusing Adrian of emotional instability and misuse of corporate authority.

The board scheduled an emergency meeting for the following morning.

That was Richard's real battlefield.

He did not need the stairwell anymore.

He needed votes.

Elena read the board notice over Adrian's shoulder.

"He'll say I'm doing this for money."

"He probably will."

"And people will believe him."

Adrian looked at her.

"Some will."

Elena gave a tired smile.

"You are terrible at comforting people."

"I've been told."

It was the first almost-normal moment between them.

Then Priya's investigator called.

A current credit-card transaction linked to Nora had appeared at a pharmacy outside Poughkeepsie.

The investigator drove there immediately.

Nora was gone, but the pharmacist remembered an older woman with silver hair who seemed nervous and asked whether the store had a rear exit.

She had purchased blood-pressure medication and a prepaid phone card.

Priya asked the investigator to leave a simple note with the pharmacist.

Adrian knows about Julian.

Elena and the baby are safe.

Call Priya Shah.

No threats.

No pressure.

Just information.

That evening, the prepaid phone rang.

Priya answered on speaker.

No one spoke for three seconds.

Then a woman's voice said her name.

"Priya?"

Adrian leaned closer.

"Nora?"

The voice trembled.

"Is Adrian there?"

"Yes."

"Put him on."

Adrian took the phone.

"Nora, where are you?"

"Somewhere I should have left sooner."

"Why did you disappear?"

Nora breathed slowly.

"Because someone entered my house while I was away and photographed my files."

Adrian looked at Priya.

"Did they take anything?"

"No."

Nora's voice steadied.

"Because the important document wasn't there."

Adrian felt the room sharpen around him.

"The trust amendment?"

"Yes."

"Where is it?"

Nora paused.

"With the only person Edward trusted more than his own company."

Adrian frowned.

"Who?"

Nora answered.

"The trust administrator's former chairman."

Priya sat upright.

Nora continued.

"Edward knew the internal filing could be blocked. He had me create a second executed original and place it in independent escrow."

Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.

The truth had not vanished.

It had been waiting outside the family's reach.

"Can you prove that?"

"Tomorrow morning."

Nora paused again.

"But Adrian, Richard knows about the second original now."

"How?"

"Because I made a mistake."

Her voice fell.

May you like

"I called Margaret two months ago."

Across the room, Margaret went perfectly still.
