Chapter 4 - The Door Without A Camera.

The handle moved once.

Then again.

Elena stood immediately, Noah held close against her shoulder.

Adrian raised one hand, signaling her to remain behind him.

Walter moved beside the door.

"Who's there?"

A pause followed.

Then Mason Trent answered from the hallway.

"Walter, open up."

Walter did not touch the lock.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Mason, why are you on twenty-two?"

Silence.

The answer came too slowly.

"Richard asked me to make sure everything was under control."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Richard doesn't run security."

"No, sir."

"Then go back downstairs."

Another pause.

"Mr. Vale, the woman may be carrying confidential documents."

Elena's hand tightened around the envelope.

Adrian heard the words and understood exactly what had gone wrong inside his company.

Mason did not ask whether the baby needed medical care.

He did not ask whether Elena was safe.

He asked about documents.

"Go downstairs, Mason."

This time, Adrian's tone left no room for discussion.

Footsteps finally moved away from the door.

Walter waited thirty seconds before looking through the narrow glass panel.

"He's gone."

Adrian took out his phone and opened an encrypted messaging application used only by senior executives.

He sent a message to Priya Shah, Vale Holdings' general counsel.

Private issue.

Come to Tower 22 using the north service elevator.

Tell no one.

Priya replied within a minute.

On my way.

Elena sat again, but she looked more frightened than before.

"You see it now."

Adrian nodded once.

"I see enough to stop trusting the obvious people."

He studied the envelope.

"But I need to know everything in there."

Elena hesitated.

"Julian told me not to open one part unless something happened to him."

"Something happened to him."

Her eyes lifted sharply.

Adrian regretted the bluntness immediately, but Elena only looked down.

"I opened it after Noah was born."

She removed a smaller cream envelope from inside the manila folder.

Its flap had already been cut.

Inside was a key card, an old storage receipt, and a note from Julian.

Locker 417, Hudson Private Storage.

Use Adrian's birthday as the code.

Adrian looked at the receipt.

The storage account had been opened three days before Julian's accident.

"Have you been there?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because two days after Julian died, someone called me from a blocked number and asked whether he had left me a key."

Adrian felt anger rise, but he kept his voice level.

"What did you say?"

"I said no."

"Did they believe you?"

"I don't think so."

Priya arrived fifteen minutes later wearing a long camel coat over business clothes and carrying no briefcase.

She looked from Adrian to Elena to the baby and instantly understood that the situation was not ordinary.

Adrian handed her the trust amendment copy.

Priya read it in silence.

Then she sat down.

"This signature is consistent with Edward's."

Adrian watched her face.

"Was this amendment ever recorded?"

"Not that I've seen."

"Could it have been removed?"

Priya did not answer immediately.

"Not legally."

That was enough.

She read Julian's letter next.

Her expression changed at Richard's name.

"What?"

Adrian asked.

Priya looked at Elena.

"Two months before Julian's accident, Richard asked my department to prepare a memo about what would happen if Julian had a child outside the family's existing estate plan."

Elena went still.

Adrian stared at Priya.

"Why didn't I know?"

"Because Richard called it hypothetical."

Priya reached for her phone.

"I still have the memo."

She searched her archived mail.

Then stopped.

"It's gone."

Adrian leaned forward.

"Deleted?"

Priya shook her head.

"Not just deleted."

She turned the screen toward him.

"The entire email thread was removed from the company archive."

A soft notification sounded from Adrian's phone.

It was a building access alert.

Someone had just used his personal executive credential.

May you like

On the forty-first floor.

Inside his locked office.
