Chapter 6 - The Woman At The Top Floor.

Margaret Vale arrived at the tower before midnight.
She did not ask permission.
She never had.
For thirty years, employees had opened doors when they saw her coming, and even after Adrian became chief executive, many still treated Margaret as if the company belonged to her personally.
She entered the twenty-second-floor lounge wearing a cream wool coat and pearl earrings, with Richard Crane walking two steps behind her.
Adrian immediately understood that neither of them had come to listen.
Margaret's eyes went to Elena first.
Then to Noah.
Something unreadable passed across her face.
"So it is true."
Elena stood.
Adrian moved slightly between them.
"You knew about Julian's marriage."
Margaret removed her gloves finger by finger.
"I knew he was involved with someone."
"That's not what I asked."
Richard stepped forward.
"Adrian, emotions are running high. We should verify the documents before anyone makes accusations."
Adrian looked at him.
"You knew she was in the building."
Richard's expression remained smooth.
"Mason informed me security had found an unauthorized guest."
"Before Mason knew where she was?"
Richard paused.
Priya noticed.
So did Elena.
Margaret's attention returned to the baby.
"The child should be somewhere warm and private."
Elena's voice became cold.
"He should be with me."
"I didn't say otherwise."
"Your paperwork did."
Priya placed the copied authorization form on the table.
Margaret glanced at it only briefly.
"That program was created to provide assistance."
"It creates custodial authority for an LLC you manage."
Priya said.
Margaret's face hardened.
"Temporary authority, in emergencies."
Adrian stepped closer to the table.
"Why was Elena asked to sign it hours after giving birth?"
Margaret looked at him.
"Because she had no stable housing."
"Her housing became unstable after a false complaint."
Elena said.
Richard sighed as though the conversation bored him.
"We don't know that the complaint was connected."
Elena reached into the envelope and pulled out an email printout.
"Then explain this."
The message had been sent from a property management consultant to her landlord.
It referenced a confidential request from Vale Family Services.
Richard's expression changed for less than a second.
That was enough for Adrian.
"You did know."
Richard's voice sharpened.
"I knew the family wanted discretion."
"Discretion is not making a new mother homeless."
Margaret's eyes flashed.
"No one made her homeless."
Elena laughed once, quietly.
"You just made every safe door close at the same time."
The baby stirred.
Elena immediately lowered her voice.
The contrast made Margaret look away.
Adrian placed Julian's letter on the table.
"Julian said Dad amended the trust."
Margaret's face became perfectly still.
Richard did not move at all.
Adrian saw both reactions.
"You knew about that too."
Margaret answered first.
"Your father discussed many changes when he was ill. Not all of them were final."
"This one has his signature."
"A copy has his signature."
Richard added.
Priya looked at him.
"The original estate file disappeared from Adrian's safe tonight."
That statement cracked the room open.
Margaret turned toward Richard.
For the first time, genuine surprise crossed her face.
Richard looked at Priya.
"Are you suggesting I took it?"
"I'm saying it was taken after a cloned credential entered Adrian's office."
Walter spoke from the doorway.
"The duplicate was created under Mason's account."
Margaret's confidence faded by a fraction.
Adrian saw it.
Maybe his mother knew more than she admitted.
Maybe she did not know everything.
That possibility was almost worse.
Richard adjusted his cuff.
"This is becoming theatrical."
Elena's hand moved to the baby blanket.
Something tiny fell from the folds and landed on the carpet.
A black plastic memory card.
Everyone looked down.
Elena stared at it in confusion.
Adrian picked it up carefully with a tissue.
A strip of white tape covered one side.
Julian's handwriting was on it.

For A.V. only.
Richard took one involuntary step forward.
