Chapter 14 - The Call From Margaret's Phone.
Margaret did not deny that the call came from her number.
She denied making it.
No one in the room knew which fact was more troubling.
Priya arranged for the phone to be examined by an independent forensic specialist.
Within hours, the first answer arrived.
Margaret's number had been spoofed through a corporate communications service managed by an outside contractor.
The contractor had been retained by Vale Holdings operations.
The approval signature belonged to Richard's deputy, Colin Voss.
Colin had spent the entire crisis in Chicago, supposedly negotiating a logistics contract.
Flight records showed something else.
He had returned to New York two nights earlier.
His hotel was three blocks from Vale Tower.
That was the missing layer.
Richard had not been acting alone.
He had built enough distance around himself that every questionable instruction appeared to come from someone else.
Mason admitted accessing Adrian's office and locker 417.
He claimed Colin told him the documents were being stolen from the Vale family and needed to be recovered before a blackmail attempt.
Mason had believed enough of the story to cooperate.
He also admitted placing the audio transmitter in the twenty-second-floor lounge months earlier as part of an unauthorized executive-monitoring program.
Adrian felt physically sick when he heard that.
The program had not been aimed at Elena.
It had been aimed at him.
Richard had been listening to senior leadership long before Noah was born.
The conflict over Julian's child had merely exposed a system already in place.
By late afternoon, independent investigators had secured company servers and suspended Colin's access.
Colin's attorney contacted Priya and said his client would cooperate.
The board issued a public statement confirming an internal governance review without naming Elena or Noah.
Adrian insisted on that condition.
Elena would not become corporate entertainment.
Margaret asked to speak with Elena privately.
Elena agreed only if the door remained open.
Margaret sat across from her in Priya's office.
For once, she had no polished explanation.
"I thought I was protecting my family from scandal."
Elena looked down at Noah.
"You protected the appearance of your family."
Margaret absorbed the difference.
"You're right."
Elena looked surprised.
Margaret continued.
"I should have asked Julian what he needed."
Her voice lowered.
"I should have asked you."
Elena did not forgive her.
Not yet.
She simply nodded.
That was more honest than a dramatic reconciliation.
Adrian spent the evening with Priya reviewing practical next steps.
The trust amendment would be filed and validated through the independent administrator.
Noah's interest would remain protected until adulthood under professional management.
Elena would control all ordinary parental decisions.
No Vale company would hold custodial authority.
Adrian offered Elena a house.
She refused.
He offered a company apartment.
She refused that too.
Finally, he asked what she actually wanted.
Elena thought for a long moment.
"A normal lease."
"Okay."
"In my name."
"Okay."
"And no one from your family gets a key."
Adrian almost smiled.
"Especially me."
Elena smiled back for the first time.
Then Walter entered with a recovered folder.
Investigators had found it in Colin's hotel safe.
It was the estate file stolen from Adrian's office.
Inside were Edward's private notes.
One page was addressed to Adrian.
Adrian opened it carefully.
His father had written only six lines.
The final line stopped him cold.
If you ever have to choose between control of the company and protection of Julian's family, choose the family.
Adrian read it twice.
Then he looked through the glass at Elena and Noah.
The choice had already been made.
