Chapter 8 - Locker 417.

The storage facility sat beneath an elevated highway on the west side of Manhattan.
Adrian arrived with Priya, Walter, and two members of the outside security team shortly after one in the morning.
Elena stayed at the tower with Noah and a pediatric nurse Priya trusted personally.
Before Adrian left, Elena made him promise one thing.
"Don't disappear with the truth."
Adrian understood why she asked.
"I won't."
Locker 417 was on the fourth floor behind two keypad doors and a narrow hall of steel units.
The manager met them with shaking hands.
He explained that someone had presented a copy of Julian's storage authorization and the correct access code.
"Did you see their face?"
Walter asked.
"Baseball cap. Glasses. Kept looking down."
"Camera?"
"At both entrances."
Priya requested copies before anyone touched the locker.
The steel door to 417 was closed but not fully latched.
Inside, several boxes had been opened.
Papers covered the concrete floor.
One empty document case sat near the back wall.
Adrian crouched beside it.
The label read E. Vale Trust - Original Amendments.
"They got here first."
Walter said.
Adrian stood slowly.
"Maybe."
Something about the room bothered him.
If the person had known exactly what to take, why open every box?
Why leave papers everywhere?
He scanned the shelves again.
On the highest shelf sat an old wooden model sailboat.
Julian had loved models as a kid.
Adrian stepped onto a folding stool and lifted it down.
The hull was heavier than it should have been.
A small panel underneath slid open.
Inside was a flash drive and a sealed letter addressed to Nora Hayes.
Priya smiled for the first time that night.
"Julian expected someone to search the obvious places."
The flash drive contained photographs of the original trust amendment.
Every page was visible beside a newspaper dated the same day, and Edward's handwritten notes appeared in the margins.
It was not the same as possessing the original.
But it was powerful corroboration.
The letter to Nora was even more important.
Julian had written that Edward gave Nora the executed original and asked her to file it directly with the independent trust administrator.
If the company copy vanished, the administrator should still have one.
Priya immediately called the administrator's emergency legal line.
After identity verification, the answer came back.
No amendment involving Julian's descendants was currently listed in the active trust file.
Adrian felt his stomach drop.
"Was one ever submitted?"
The administrator's lawyer could not answer without a formal records review.
Priya requested it immediately.
Walter's phone buzzed.
His colleague had reached Nora's house.
The home was dark.
Her car was gone.
Mail had accumulated inside the front vestibule.
A neighbor said Nora had left suddenly two months earlier and had not returned.
No one knew where she went.
Priya looked at Adrian.
"Julian's warning wasn't random."
A member of the outside security team entered from the hallway carrying a printed still from the facility camera.
"We pulled the person who opened the locker."
The image was grainy.
The face was partly hidden.
But the jacket had a stitched emblem on the chest.
Vale Tower Security.
Walter stared at it.
"That's one of ours."
Adrian looked closer.
The person wore a ring on his right hand.
A wide silver band with a black center stone.
Adrian had seen that ring every morning for five years.
Mason Trent wore it.
Priya's phone rang before anyone could speak.
It was Elena.
Adrian answered immediately.
"What's wrong?"
Elena whispered.
"The nurse went to get formula."
Adrian looked at Priya.
"And?"
"Someone just knocked on the lounge door."
"Don't open it."
"I didn't."
There was a pause.
Then Elena added four words that turned Adrian cold.
May you like
"He says he's Walter."
Walter was standing beside Adrian.
