Chapter 3 - Four Nights Underground.

Adrian turned his phone face down.

Elena watched the movement as if it were a test.

"He already knows."

"Maybe."

"No."

Her voice sharpened.

"He always knows."

Adrian wanted to reject the accusation, but the timing of Richard's message made that impossible.

Walter walked to the lounge door and checked the lock again.

"Mr. Vale, only three people knew I called you about the stairwell."

Adrian looked at him.

"Who?"

"You, me, and the command desk."

"Who was at the command desk?"

"Mason Trent."

Mason was Vale Tower's head of corporate security.

He had been hired by Richard.

Adrian felt the first real crack in a structure he had trusted for years.

Elena opened the envelope again.

"There's more."

She removed a handwritten letter folded inside a plastic sleeve.

The paper was worn at the creases.

Adrian recognized Julian's handwriting before he read the first word.

Adrian,

If Elena ever puts this in your hands, it means I failed to fix this myself.

Adrian stopped reading.

His throat tightened, but his expression remained controlled.

He continued.

The letter described Julian's marriage, Elena's pregnancy, and a bitter argument with Richard over the trust amendment.

Julian believed someone inside Vale Holdings was trying to keep Edward's amendment from being recorded with the trust administrator.

He did not accuse Richard directly.

He wrote that Richard had warned him to "think about what a child could do to the balance of the company."

The sentence sat on the page like a weight.

Julian ended the letter with one request.

Believe Elena before you believe the boardroom.

Adrian folded the letter carefully.

"Why didn't you come to me sooner?"

Elena's face hardened.

"I tried."

She told him she had visited Vale Tower twice during the pregnancy.

Both times, reception told her Adrian was unavailable.

On the second visit, Mason Trent personally escorted her outside.

He had been polite.

Too polite.

He told her Adrian knew about the marriage and wanted no involvement.

"I never knew."

Elena's eyes stayed on him.

"I know that now."

"How?"

"Because when you saw Noah, you looked confused."

The answer struck Adrian harder than accusation would have.

Elena explained the last four nights.

After leaving the hospital, she went to a family shelter in Brooklyn.

Before midnight, a black sedan parked across the street and remained there for hours.

The next day, a man came inside asking whether a woman with a newborn had checked in under her name.

The shelter worker refused to answer.

Elena left through a side exit.

She came to Vale Tower because Julian had once told her Adrian often stayed late and used the private garage entrance.

She could not get past the lobby.

So she entered through a service stairwell when a delivery team opened the door.

Each night, she waited for Adrian.

Each night, exhaustion won before she saw him.

Walter looked ashamed.

"I noticed her the second night."

Elena glanced at him.

Walter continued.

"She told me she had nowhere safe to go. I brought water and food, but I didn't report her until tonight."

"Why tonight?"

Adrian asked.

Walter looked toward Noah.

"Because someone asked me whether she was still here."

The room went still.

"Who?"

Walter hesitated.

"Mason Trent."

Adrian picked up his phone.

This time, he did not call Richard.

He called the only person who had worked with his father long enough to recognize every version of Edward Vale's signature.

Nora Hayes.

The family trust attorney had retired eighteen months earlier.

The call went directly to voicemail.

Adrian tried again.

Nothing.

Then Walter's radio crackled.

Mason's voice came through the speaker.

"Walter, report your location."

Walter looked at Adrian.

May you like

Adrian reached over and switched the radio off.

A second later, someone tried the locked lounge door.
