Chapter 2 - The Name Behind The Seal.

Adrian moved Elena and the baby out of the stairwell without taking the envelope from her hands.
That decision surprised Walter.
It surprised Elena more.
They entered a small executive lounge on the twenty-second floor that had been closed for renovation, and Walter locked the corridor doors from the inside.
The room had no cameras, no public elevator access, and only one narrow bank of windows overlooking Manhattan.
Elena remained standing until Adrian placed a chair near the radiator and stepped away from it.
"You can sit there."
She lowered herself carefully, never loosening her hold on Noah.
Adrian removed his overcoat and placed it over the back of another chair.
He stayed several feet away.
"Start with my brother."
Elena looked down at the envelope.
"Julian and I were married."
Adrian's face did not change, but Walter turned sharply toward her.
"No."
The word came from Adrian quietly.
Elena reached into the envelope and removed a folded document.
She placed it on the coffee table instead of handing it to him.
Adrian stepped forward and opened it.
It was a certified marriage record from Connecticut.
Julian Vale and Elena Maren.
Fourteen months earlier.
Adrian read the names twice.
"My mother told me you two had ended things."
Elena gave a short, humorless breath.
"Your mother never spoke to me."
Adrian looked up.
"Then who did?"
"Richard Crane."
That name changed the room.
Richard had served as Vale Holdings' chief operating officer for eleven years.
He had been Edward Vale's most trusted executive and, after Edward's death, had become the person who kept the company stable while Adrian took control.
"What did Richard say?"
Elena adjusted the blanket around Noah's face.
"He said Julian had embarrassed the family."
She paused.
"He said the marriage would never be recognized inside the company."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"A company does not recognize marriages. Courts do."
"That's what Julian said."
Elena removed a second document.
This one was a photocopy of a trust amendment bearing Edward Vale's signature.
Adrian stared at the date.
Three weeks before his father's final hospitalization.
The amendment added any legally recognized child of Julian Vale to a protected family trust.
The percentage listed beside that future child was large enough to alter voting control in Vale Holdings.
Walter slowly exhaled.
Adrian read the page again.
"Where is the original?"
"I don't know."
"Who gave you this copy?"
"Julian."
Elena finally looked directly at Adrian.
"He told me your father knew about us."
Adrian felt something cold settle behind his ribs.
His father had never mentioned Elena.
Never mentioned the marriage.
Never mentioned a possible grandchild.
"Why are you homeless?"
Elena's eyes flashed with embarrassment and anger.
"I wasn't."
That answer came faster than anything else she had said.
She explained that she had lived in a small apartment in Queens until two weeks before Noah was born.
Then her landlord received a legal complaint claiming the unit had been subleased fraudulently.
The complaint was false, but the owner panicked and demanded that Elena leave while it was reviewed.
A temporary hotel reservation appeared in her email the same afternoon.
It was prepaid by the Vale Foundation.
She refused it.
Then, while she was in the hospital after Noah's birth, a woman carrying a Vale Foundation badge offered her a housing package, financial assistance, and private medical care.
There was one condition.
Elena had to sign a stack of papers immediately.
She had asked to read them overnight.
The woman became cold.
"What were the papers?"
Adrian asked.
Elena pulled a crumpled photocopy from the envelope.
Adrian read the first page.
It was titled Temporary Family Support Authorization.
The title sounded harmless.
The language was not.
Buried on page six was a clause allowing an appointed representative to make custodial decisions for Noah for an undefined emergency period.
Walter muttered under his breath.
Adrian's voice became very calm.
"Who was the appointed representative?"
Elena pointed to the bottom of the page.
Adrian read the name.
Vale Family Services LLC.
He had never heard of it.
His phone vibrated on the table.
The screen showed one incoming call.
Richard Crane.
Elena saw the name and went pale.
Adrian let the phone ring.
Then a message appeared.

I heard security found someone downstairs.
