Chapter 7 - The Voice In The Card.
Adrian noticed Richard's movement.
So did Priya.
Margaret looked from the memory card to Richard and then back to her son.
"What is that?"
"We're about to find out."
Adrian placed the card into an offline laptop that Walter retrieved from a sealed IT cabinet.
Priya insisted they disconnect every network function before opening the files.
The memory card contained three audio recordings and one scanned document.
The first recording was dated nine months earlier.
Julian's voice filled the lounge.
It was steady, familiar, and devastatingly alive.
"Adrian, if you're hearing this, I ran out of time to explain it in person."
Adrian stared at the laptop screen.
Elena closed her eyes.
Margaret sat down for the first time.
Julian described meeting with Edward shortly before Edward's final hospitalization.
Edward had learned about the marriage and Elena's pregnancy.
He had been angry that Julian kept the marriage secret, but he had accepted Elena and ordered the family trust amended.
Then Julian said something that changed Adrian's understanding of the entire dispute.
"Dad told me the amendment wasn't about money."
The recording continued.
"He wanted any child of mine protected from company politics."
Adrian looked at Richard.
Richard did not react.
Julian's voice continued.
"Richard says the amendment could shift voting control if my child reaches adulthood. He wants me to sign a waiver that would keep my branch of the trust nonvoting. I said no."
Margaret whispered.
"Julian never told me that."
Elena looked at her.
"He didn't trust you."
Margaret's eyes filled with anger, but she did not answer.
The second recording was shorter.
Julian said he believed trust documents were being delayed inside the company legal system.
He had copied the amendment and moved supporting records to a private storage locker.
Then came the line that made Richard finally lose color.
"If Richard says this is about protecting the company, ask him why Vale Family Services was created before Elena even knew she was pregnant."
Priya turned to Richard.
"Seven months ago, you said the LLC had just been created."
Richard's mouth tightened.
"Julian was mistaken."
Adrian opened the scanned document.
It was an incorporation draft for Vale Family Services LLC.
The date was seventeen months earlier.
The listed organizer was Richard Crane.
Margaret stared at him.
"You told me the entity was new."
Richard recovered quickly.
"The original shell was never activated. We repurposed it."
"For what?"
Adrian asked.
"Family contingency planning."
Elena's voice cut through the room.
"My child is not a contingency."
No one spoke for several seconds.
The third audio file was only forty-two seconds long.
Julian sounded tired.
He said he had placed the original amendment, marriage documentation, and correspondence from Edward in locker 417.
He also said one person outside the family could verify everything.
Nora Hayes.
At the end, Julian gave a warning.
"If Nora suddenly disappears, don't assume she changed her mind."
Adrian immediately called her again.
Voicemail.
Priya searched public records and found Nora's retirement address in Westchester.
Walter contacted a trusted off-duty colleague to drive there quietly.
Richard stood.
"This has gone far enough."
Adrian looked at him.
"Sit down."
Richard's face hardened.
"You don't have authority to detain me."
"I'm not detaining you."
Adrian pointed toward the door.
"You can leave."
Richard glanced at Margaret.
She did not defend him.
He walked out without another word.
Thirty seconds later, Priya's phone rang.
She listened.
Her face changed.
"That was the storage company."
Adrian stood.
"What happened?"
"Someone accessed locker 417 tonight."
Elena went pale.

"Twenty-three minutes ago."
