Chapter 5 - The Empty Desk.

Adrian's office was supposed to be empty.

His physical credential was in his pocket.

He took it out and placed it on the table where everyone could see it.

Priya stared at the access alert.

"Cloned credential."

Walter looked toward the hallway.

"Mason can authorize duplicates."

Adrian did not waste time asking whether that was possible.

He called the building's independent elevator maintenance line instead of internal security.

Within five minutes, he had the executive elevators frozen between floors except for the north service car.

Then he called an outside security firm his father had once used during a shareholder dispute.

"I want two people at the north garage entrance and two in the lobby. No uniforms."

Priya raised an eyebrow.

"You're locking down your own building without your security chief."

"I'm finding out whether I still own the doors."

Elena watched him with guarded disbelief.

Adrian turned to her.

"You and Noah stay here with Priya and Walter."

"No."

The answer was immediate.

"Elena."

"That envelope is about my son."

"Which is why you should stay away from whoever is in my office."

Elena stood.

"I've spent months being told what is best for me by people who were protecting themselves."

Adrian stopped.

The sentence landed exactly where it needed to.

He nodded once.

"Then you decide."

Elena looked at Noah.

"I stay here."

Adrian and Walter took the service stairs from twenty-two to forty-one because Adrian no longer trusted the elevators.

They reached the executive floor nine minutes later.

The corridor lights were on.

Adrian's office door was closed.

Walter checked the adjoining conference rooms first.

Empty.

Adrian used his key.

The office looked untouched.

His desk was immaculate.

The city burned with light beyond the windows.

Then Walter pointed to the bookshelf.

One framed photograph had been moved.

It showed Adrian, Julian, and Edward at a charity regatta six years earlier.

Behind the frame was a wall safe.

Adrian crossed the room and opened it.

Nothing appeared missing.

Then he saw a gap between two folders.

"Someone took a file."

"Which one?"

Walter asked.

Adrian searched the labels.

His father's private estate notes were gone.

Only four people had known that folder existed.

Adrian.

Priya.

Richard.

And Nora Hayes.

Walter looked toward the desk.

"Could the person still be on this floor?"

A soft sound answered him.

The private washroom door clicked.

Walter moved first.

He opened it quickly.

No one was inside.

But the window above the utility ledge stood open by several inches.

A black leather glove lay on the floor.

Adrian did not touch it.

"Call the outside team."

Walter did.

One of the men reported that a maintenance worker had exited the service elevator moments before the lockdown and left through a side loading area.

No company badge was visible.

Adrian returned to the desk and looked at the access log.

The cloned credential had been created under Mason Trent's administrator account.

That was useful.

It was not proof that Mason had used it.

Adrian had learned enough from his father to know the difference.

Back on twenty-two, Priya had found something else.

She had searched public corporate registrations for Vale Family Services LLC.

The company existed.

It had been formed seven months earlier.

Three weeks after Julian's accident.

Its listed manager was a Delaware holding company.

Priya traced the holding company through two additional registrations.

At the end was a name none of them expected.

Margaret Vale.

Adrian's mother.

Elena stared at him when he returned.

She did not need Priya to explain.

Adrian looked at the page bearing his mother's name.

For the first time that night, his certainty broke.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, it was Margaret.

Adrian answered.

His mother's voice was composed.

"Whatever that woman told you, do not sign anything."

Adrian looked across the room at Elena and Noah.

May you like

"How do you know she's here?"

Margaret did not answer.
