By nine the next morning, the story inside Vale Holdings had split into two competing versions.
Richard's version was already circulating among directors.
A financially unstable woman had appeared with a newborn and unverified documents.
Adrian, overwhelmed by grief over Julian, had abandoned procedure and suspended senior employees without evidence.
Margaret had supposedly been manipulated into doubting long-standing advisers.
The language was careful.
Nothing in it was openly cruel.
That made it more effective.
Elena read the summary and handed it back to Priya.
"He made me sound dangerous without saying one dangerous thing."
Priya nodded.
"That's how reputational attacks usually work."
Adrian wanted Elena nowhere near the board meeting.
Elena disagreed.
"If they are going to discuss me, I will be in the room."
Priya supported her.
"As Julian's legal spouse, she has standing in matters affecting his estate interests."
So Elena attended.
She wore a simple navy dress Priya had arranged from a nearby department store.
She kept the hospital bracelet on.
Not for drama.
Because she had not yet had time to remove it.
Noah stayed with a licensed caregiver in a secure room nearby.
The boardroom fell silent when Elena entered beside Adrian.
Richard sat at the far end with his attorney.
He looked rested.
That irritated Adrian more than anger would have.
The independent board chair opened the meeting.
Richard spoke first.
He denied directing pressure against Elena.
He denied altering documents.
He denied instructing Mason to access Adrian's office or Julian's storage locker.
Then he questioned the authenticity of Julian's recordings.
"Digital files can be manipulated."
Priya answered calmly.
"Which is why forensic copies have already been sent to an independent examiner."
Richard's attorney objected to discussing unverified evidence.
The chair allowed Priya to continue with documentary facts.
She presented the marriage record.
The incorporation draft for Vale Family Services.
The altered custodial authorization.
The storage-facility image of Mason.
The access record from Adrian's office.
Then Elena spoke.
She did not cry.
She did not accuse anyone of crimes.
She simply described what happened after Julian died.
"Every person who approached me used polite words."
Her voice remained steady.
"Assistance. Privacy. Support. Stability."
She looked around the table.
"But every offer required me to give up something I had not agreed to give."
Richard shifted in his chair.
Elena continued.
"My apartment. My documents. My right to read before signing. My right to raise my son without a company deciding what was convenient."
One director lowered his eyes.
Another asked Richard whether he had personally authorized contact with Elena's landlord.
Richard said no.
Priya produced the consultant email.
Richard said the phrase confidential request could refer to routine foundation outreach.
The chair looked unconvinced.
Then the boardroom door opened.
Nora Hayes entered with two attorneys and an elderly man carrying a locked document case.
Every head turned.
Richard's composure finally broke.
Only slightly.
But Adrian saw it.
Nora sat beside Priya.
"I apologize for being late."
The elderly man introduced himself as Samuel Beck, former chairman of Heritage Trust Administration.
He placed the locked case on the table.
"I am here because Edward Vale asked me to preserve an instrument outside normal corporate channels."
Richard's attorney stood.
"What instrument?"
Samuel opened the case.
Inside was a sealed folder.
Nora looked at Elena.
