Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The house was supposed to be a quiet sanctuary. David had only stepped out of the nursery for a moment to grab a clean bottle, leaving his seven-year-old daughter, Lily, resting near her baby brother’s crib. But a sudden, piercing shriek shattered the suburban peace.
David sprinted down the hallway, his heart hammering against his ribs. He burst into the well-lit nursery and was met with a scene that made his blood run cold. Eleanor, his estranged mother-in-law, was leaning aggressively over the white crib. Her hand was twisted tightly into Lily’s long, wavy red hair. The little girl was sobbing uncontrollably, her face a portrait of absolute terror as Eleanor yelled, demanding answers to some unhinged question.
"Answer me!" Eleanor screamed, entirely oblivious to the physical and emotional damage she was causing.

Blind rage took over. David charged across the room, his muscular frame moving with terrifying speed. "Get away from her!" he roared. He grabbed Eleanor, forcibly breaking her vicious hold on his daughter, and violently shoved her backward. She stumbled across the room, crashing against a dark wooden dresser and knocking over a stack of children's books.
Eleanor threw her hands up defensively, shock briefly replacing the malice in her eyes. David stepped between her and the crib, acting as an impenetrable shield for Lily. His veins pulsed, his jaw set in a furious lock as he pointed a shaking finger at the woman who had just crossed the ultimate line.
