Chapter 19: The Anniversary

The one-year anniversary of Sarah's passing fell on a crisp, clear December morning. David had taken the day off from work, and he let Lily skip school.
They bundled up in their winter coats and drove to the cemetery. It was a beautiful, peaceful place, surrounded by ancient, weeping willow trees. David carried a large wreath of pinecones and red ribbon, while Lily held a single white rose.
They stood by the granite headstone in companionable silence. There were no tears today, only a quiet, grounded respect.
"We're doing okay, Sarah," David whispered, brushing a fallen leaf from the top of the stone. "Better than okay, actually. The kids are amazing. You'd be so proud of her." He looked down at Lily.

Lily stepped forward and gently laid the white rose at the base of the headstone. She touched the silver locket at her neck. "I wear it every day, Mom," she said softly. "Just like you wanted."
They stood together for a few more minutes, a family of three honoring the memory of their fourth. They weren't broken. They had been tested by grief and by malice, but they had survived. As they walked back to the car, holding hands, David felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the life they had fought so hard to protect.
