Chapter 4: The Silver Locket

Once the baby, little Leo, finally stirred and needed a bottle, the immediate shock of the afternoon began to wear off. David went through the familiar motions of feeding his son, his eyes frequently darting to the living room where Lily sat wrapped in her favorite fleece blanket.

After Leo was burped and settled back to sleep, David sat on the edge of the sofa next to his daughter. The house was quiet again, the kind of quiet that usually brought peace, though today it felt fragile.

"Lily," David said softly, leaning forward. "Can I see it?"

Lily hesitated for a fraction of a second before reaching into the pocket of her jeans. Her small, trembling fingers pulled out a delicate, tarnished silver locket attached to a thin chain. It was a vintage piece, passed down through her mother’s side of the family. Eleanor had always coveted it, believing it belonged to her rather than her late daughter, Sarah.

David held his hand out, palm up, and Lily gently placed the locket into it. He clicked it open. Inside was a tiny, slightly faded photograph of Sarah holding a newborn Lily. A lump formed in David's throat.

"Your mom wanted you to have this," David told her, his voice thick with emotion. He carefully handed it back, making sure Lily’s fingers closed tightly around it. "She told me exactly where she hid it, and she said, 'Make sure Lily gets this when she's ready.' You were so brave to protect it today."

Lily looked down at the silver oval resting in her palm. "Grandma said I was just a kid and didn't deserve it."

"Your grandmother is wrong," David said firmly, catching Lily's eye to ensure she understood. "That locket is yours. It is a piece of your mom's heart, and she left it for you. We’re going to get a stronger chain for it tomorrow so you can wear it every single day, okay?"

A small, hesitant smile finally broke through the tear stains on Lily’s face. She nodded, clutching the necklace against her chest.
