The silence that followed the slamming door was heavy, broken only by Lily’s ragged breathing. David immediately dropped to his knees, his imposing frame suddenly shrinking as he gently wrapped his strong arms around his daughter.
"I've got you, sweetie," he whispered into her red hair, the same hair Eleanor had violently yanked just moments before. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there faster. You're safe now. I'm right here."
Lily buried her tear-streaked face into his dark blue shirt, her tiny hands gripping the fabric like a lifeline. "She wanted Mommy's locket," she sobbed, her voice muffled against his chest. "I didn't want to give it to her. It's all I have left."
"You did exactly the right thing," David reassured her, kissing the top of her head. He rocked her gently back and forth on the carpet, letting the steady, calm rhythm of his heartbeat soothe her fading panic.

He knew the road ahead would be difficult. Protecting his children from the lingering toxicity of their extended family was going to require immense vigilance and strength. But holding Lily in his arms, feeling her breathing slowly return to a normal, steady pace, David made a silent vow. They were a family of three now, and he would be their wall. No one would ever break them apart again.
