Chapter 12: A Blank Canvas

Saturday morning dawned bright and clear, the sun reflecting brilliantly off the fresh snow. David helped Lily zip up her heavy pink winter coat and pulled a blue knit beanie over Leo’s small head.

"Alright, team," David announced, opening the front door to the freezing, crisp air. "First one to the oak tree has to make the first snowball!"

Lily shrieked with delight, bolting out the door and leaving small, frantic boot prints in the untouched snow. David followed close behind, holding Leo securely in his arms, his deep laughter echoing through the quiet neighborhood.

There was no fear of a silver sedan creeping down the street. There was no anxiety about who might be knocking on the door. There was only the bright, blinding white of a fresh start.

As Lily packed a handful of snow together, her rosy cheeks glowing with genuine happiness, she paused and looked back at her father. Her hazel eyes, once so full of terror in that nursery, were now bright, vibrant, and fiercely brave.

David smiled back, his heart completely full. The storm had passed. The foundation of their home was secure, built on trust and a love that fiercely protected its own. They had a long, beautiful life ahead of them, and for the first time in a long time, David couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.
