Chapter 6: A Breath of Fresh Air

By Saturday, the heavy emotional fog had lifted enough for David to suggest a trip to the local park. It was a crisp autumn afternoon, the trees painted in vibrant shades of gold and amber.
David pushed Leo’s stroller along the paved walking path while Lily skipped ahead, her red hair bouncing with every step. Around her neck, the silver locket glinted in the afternoon sun, secured safely on a brand-new, sturdy chain they had bought at a local jeweler on Thursday.
"Dad, look!" Lily shouted, pointing toward the duck pond. "They have babies!"
David jogged up to where she was standing, parking the stroller safely on the grass. A mother duck was gliding across the reflective surface of the water, trailed closely by a line of tiny, fuzzy ducklings.
"They stick pretty close to their mom, don't they?" David observed gently, standing behind Lily and resting his hands on her shoulders.
"Yeah," Lily said softly. She reached up, her fingers naturally finding the locket at her collarbone. "Just like me and Mom."
David felt a profound sense of warmth wash over him. A few days ago, mentioning her mother would have brought Lily to tears, wrapped in the fresh trauma of Eleanor’s cruel visit. But today, standing by the water, Lily's voice held peace, not pain. The memory of her mother was returning to what it was meant to be—a source of comfort, not conflict.

"Exactly like you and Mom," David agreed, squeezing her shoulders.
They stood there for a long time, watching the water ripple. David looked at his daughter, standing tall and resilient, and at his son, sleeping soundly in his stroller. They had been through the fire, but they had come out on the other side, forged together, stronger than ever.
