Chapter 9: The Parent-Teacher Conference

November brought a crisp chill to the air and the scheduled autumn parent-teacher conferences. David sat in a tiny chair across from Mrs. Gable, Lily’s second-grade teacher, feeling a familiar flutter of parental nerves.
"I have to tell you, Mr. Hayes," Mrs. Gable began, folding her hands over a neat stack of papers. "Lily has made an incredible turnaround over the last month."
David leaned forward, attentive. "She has?"
"After her mother passed, she was understandably withdrawn. She barely spoke during recess and struggled to focus," the teacher explained, offering a sympathetic smile. "But recently, there’s a new light in her. She’s participating, she’s laughing with her friends, and she seems so much lighter."
"We’ve had a few difficult transitions at home," David admitted carefully. "But we are focusing on protecting our peace."

"Well, it's working," Mrs. Gable said warmly. "She actually did a show-and-tell presentation yesterday. She showed the class a beautiful silver locket. She spoke about her mother with such grace and love. You are doing a wonderful job raising her, David."
Walking out to the parking lot under the amber glow of the streetlights, David felt a tight knot in his chest finally loosen. His daughter was healing. The dark cloud Eleanor had tried to drag into their home had been firmly shut out, allowing Lily the space to finally breathe.
