Chapter 15: The Cedar Chest

On a quiet Sunday afternoon, while Leo was napping, David and Lily decided it was time to open the heavy cedar chest at the foot of David’s bed. It held Sarah’s most cherished belongings—things David hadn't felt ready to look at for months.
"Are you sure you want to do this today?" David asked, his hand resting on the brass latch.
Lily nodded bravely. "I want to see Mom's things."
David unlatched the chest and lifted the heavy lid. The faint, familiar scent of lavender and old paper drifted into the room. Together, they sifted through the memories. There were old college sweaters, a collection of vintage records, and stacks of handwritten journals.
Lily pulled out a soft, oversized knitted blanket. "Mom made this, didn't she?"

"She did," David smiled, a bittersweet lump in his throat. "It took her six months. She was knitting it while she was pregnant with you."
Instead of the agonizing grief that used to accompany these conversations, there was a gentle, comforting nostalgia. They spent an hour sitting on the floor, wrapping themselves in the blanket and reading passages from Sarah's journals. They weren't hiding from the past anymore, nor were they letting someone else twist their memories into something ugly. They were reclaiming Sarah’s legacy, piece by piece, and filling the house with her love.
