Chapter 5: Building the Wall

The next morning, the bright suburban sun felt like a stark contrast to the dark events of the previous day. David woke up early, his mind clear and deeply focused. He brewed a pot of coffee and sat at the kitchen island, opening his laptop.
His phone buzzed on the granite countertop. The caller ID flashed Eleanor.
Without a second thought, David declined the call, went into his settings, and permanently blocked her number. He wasn't going to entertain apologies, threats, or manipulation. The boundary had been crossed, and there was no going back.
He spent the next hour drafting an email to his attorney. He detailed the incident in the nursery—the physical assault on his daughter, the trespassing, and the verbal threats. He requested immediate legal action to establish a formal restraining order. David knew that locking the front door wasn't enough; he needed the weight of the law to ensure Eleanor could never terrorize his children again.
When Lily woke up and padded into the kitchen, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, David closed his laptop.
"Pancakes?" he asked, forcing a light, cheerful tone into his voice.
"With chocolate chips?" Lily asked, her eyes brightening.

"Is there any other way to eat them?" David smiled, pulling the mixing bowl from the cabinet.
As he flipped the pancakes on the griddle, he watched Lily playfully make faces at Leo, who was happily babbling in his high chair. The tension that had gripped the house the day before was dissolving. David was building a fortress around them—not of bricks, but of boundaries, love, and unwavering protection.
