Chapter 10 - Margaret's Original Sin.

Police obtained warrants before noon.

Victor Crane's office was searched first.

Investigators seized computers, billing records, two phones, and a locked metal case from the bottom drawer of his desk.

Margaret's reaction was immediate.

She went on television.

Sitting beside a public relations consultant, she described herself as the victim of a "vindictive daughter-in-law exploiting a family misunderstanding for financial gain."

She never mentioned the chain.

She never mentioned Lily by name.

She called the audio recording "a manipulated children's toy."

Then she said something Evelyn had not expected.

"My son is being coerced."

Daniel watched the interview from Maya's conference room.

"That's what she does."

Evelyn turned toward him.

"What?"

"She rewrites the story while you're still standing in it."

The words might have earned sympathy once.

Now they only irritated her.

"You helped her write this one."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

Later that afternoon, Victor's locked metal case was opened under warrant.

Inside were copies of Evelyn's fertility records, a prepaid phone, several forged laboratory forms, and photographs of Lily taken outside school.

There was also a flash drive labeled R.H.

The initials belonged to Richard Hale.

The drive contained audio files recorded in Richard's study during the final months of his life.

Most were ordinary business dictation.

One was not.

Richard's voice began calmly.

"Margaret, sit down."

Margaret replied, "I will not be spoken to like an employee."

"Then stop stealing like one."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The recording revealed that Richard had discovered Margaret secretly diverting company funds through Victor.

When he threatened to expose them, Margaret threatened him with a scandal of her own.

She claimed Richard was not Daniel's biological father.

The room went silent around the laptop.

Daniel opened his eyes.

"What?"

On the recording, Richard laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was cruel.

"You spent thirty-five years protecting that lie, Margaret."

Margaret's voice sharpened.

"Keep your voice down."

Richard continued.

"Daniel is my son in every way that matters."

"And unlike you, I never punished him for the circumstances of his birth."

Daniel stood so suddenly his chair struck the wall.

Evelyn stared at him.

The family trust's biological-heir clause had suddenly become a trap Margaret herself had lived inside for decades.

Margaret had spent years demanding blood purity from Lily while hiding the fact that Daniel was not biologically Richard's child.

The hypocrisy was almost impossible to comprehend.

Maya paused the recording.

"If Daniel isn't Richard's biological son, how was he ever eligible for the trust?"

Samuel Price, who had joined by video call, answered quietly.

"Richard legally adopted Daniel when he was six months old."

"The later trust defined biological heir through Daniel, not through Richard."

Daniel sat again, stunned.

"Who was my biological father?"

No one knew.

Then the prepaid phone from Victor's case powered on during forensic examination.

One unsent draft message appeared on the screen.

It was addressed to Margaret.

THERESA IS TALKING.

WE NEED TO MOVE THE GIRL BEFORE FRIDAY.

Evelyn felt every muscle in her body tense.

Maya looked at her.

"Which girl?"

May you like

Evelyn already knew the answer.

Lily.
