Chapter 12 - The Day Lily Vanished.

Evelyn reached Lily's school in nine minutes.

She remembered none of the drive.

The principal met her at the entrance with two police officers and the expression of someone who already knew apologies were useless.

A woman had arrived at 10:42 a.m.

She presented a temporary caregiver authorization bearing Evelyn's name and a photocopy of her driver's license.

The office secretary had called the number listed on the form.

A woman answered and confirmed the pickup.

The number was not Evelyn's.

Security footage showed the stranger clearly enough to establish that she was not Margaret.

She appeared to be in her forties, with dark hair, glasses, and a navy coat.

Lily did not resist her.

That detail devastated Evelyn.

"Why would Lily go with someone she didn't know?"

The secretary began crying.

"The woman said you had been hurt."

Evelyn gripped the edge of the desk.

"She told Lily you were at the hospital."

Officer Ramirez took control of the investigation.

An Amber Alert was prepared.

Traffic cameras were pulled.

Daniel arrived twenty minutes later and nearly fought a security guard who tried to stop him at the front office.

"Where is she?"

Evelyn turned on him.

"You tell me."

His face went white.

"You think I did this?"

"Your mother said Lily wasn't supposed to remain a beneficiary."

"I didn't know she meant this."

"You never know until after she hurts someone."

The words landed hard.

Daniel looked as if he wanted to defend himself.

For once, he did not.

At 12:16 p.m., police located the pickup vehicle on a traffic camera heading north.

The license plate belonged to a rental car.

The renter was Theresa Vale.

Evelyn stared at the report.

"Theresa took her?"

Maya shook her head.

"Or someone used Theresa's identity."

Then Evelyn remembered the message on Theresa's mirror.

I NEVER CHANGED IT.

Maybe Theresa had not disappeared to run from police.

Maybe she had disappeared from Margaret.

At 12:41, Evelyn received a call from an unknown number.

Officer Ramirez signaled for everyone to stay quiet while the call was traced.

Evelyn answered.

"Hello?"

A woman whispered.

"Is Lily with you?"

Evelyn's knees nearly gave out.

"Who is this?"

"Theresa Vale."

The room erupted into silent motion around her.

"Where is my daughter?"

Theresa began crying.

"I don't know."

"The car is in your name."

"Victor rented it using my license months ago."

"Why?"

"Because he had copies of everything."

Theresa said she had once helped Victor access Evelyn's clinic file after Margaret threatened to expose a prescription theft from years earlier.

But she insisted she had never changed the medical record.

Victor had done that later using her credentials.

When Theresa discovered the plan to create a false DNA report, she demanded more money and threatened to go to police.

That was when she realized Victor intended to make her the fall person.

She fled.

"Where would he take Lily?"

Theresa became quiet.

"There is a lake house."

Daniel looked up instantly.

"My grandfather's lake house."

Margaret had sold it years ago.

Or claimed she had.

Samuel searched company property records.

The house had not been sold.

Ownership had been transferred to V.C. Strategic Services.

Victor's shell company.

Police vehicles left immediately.

Evelyn rode with Ramirez.

Daniel followed with another officer.

The lake house stood forty miles outside the city at the end of a private road lined with pines.

The front door was unlocked.

A child's white shoe lay in the hallway.

Evelyn recognized it before anyone said a word.

"Lily!"

Ramirez stopped her from running farther inside.

Officers cleared the first floor.

Empty.

They reached the basement.

A television was playing cartoons behind a locked door.

Police forced it open.

The room was empty.

On a table sat Lily's other shoe, a juice box, and a sheet of paper.

The paper contained a single handwritten sentence.

EVELYN, YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE DEAL.

Then Daniel noticed a small red light beneath the table.

May you like

A camera was recording them.

Someone knew they were there.
