Chapter 9 - The Letter from a Dead Man.
Evelyn opened Richard Hale's envelope at Maya's office the next morning.
No one spoke while she unfolded the letter.
Richard's handwriting was small and precise.
Evelyn read the first sentence twice.
Margaret has been afraid of Lily since the day she was born.
She looked up.
Daniel sat across the table under the terms of his supervised cooperation agreement with police.
His face was blank.
"Did you know about this?"
"No."
Evelyn continued reading.
Richard wrote that Margaret had demanded a private DNA test shortly after Lily's birth.
Richard had refused to help her.
He believed Margaret's obsession had nothing to do with Evelyn's fidelity.
It had begun with the family trust.
The original trust did not merely transfer money to Daniel when he had a biological child.
It gave that child a controlling interest in Hale Development at age twenty-five.
Lily would eventually control more voting shares than Margaret.
Evelyn stopped reading.
"She was afraid of being replaced by a baby?"
Daniel stared at the table.
"My mother has run Hale Development since Dad died."
Maya shook her head.
"That still doesn't explain forged medical records."
The answer came in the second page.
Richard described discovering that Margaret had attempted to persuade a private investigator to fabricate evidence that Evelyn had an affair.
He had threatened to remove Margaret as trustee.
Three weeks later, Richard suffered the stroke that killed him.
Evelyn's skin prickled.
There was no accusation in the letter.
Only one unsettling sentence.
If anything happens to me before I amend the trust, do not assume Margaret stopped trying.
Maya immediately copied the letter for police.
Daniel looked sick.
"Dad never told me."
"Maybe he knew you would tell her," Evelyn said.
Daniel flinched.
The final page contained instructions for finding a bank safe-deposit box.
Richard had placed duplicate trust documents there with a private memorandum.
The box required two keys.
One key was taped inside the envelope.
The other had been given to Richard's longtime accountant, Samuel Price.
Samuel agreed to meet them at the bank.
He arrived carrying a worn leather briefcase and an expression of dread.
"I hoped no one would ever need this."
Inside the safe-deposit box was the original trust, correspondence with Richard's estate attorney, and a handwritten amendment that had never been formally filed.
The amendment removed Margaret as trustee if she attempted to challenge the legitimacy of any grandchild through fraud, coercion, or fabricated evidence.
More importantly, it named Evelyn as successor trustee until Lily turned twenty-five.
Daniel stared at the page.
"If this is enforceable, Mom loses control of everything."
Maya corrected him.
"If it is enforceable, your mother had tens of millions of reasons to destroy Lily's status."
Samuel opened his briefcase.
"There is something else."
He removed a small ledger.
For four years, Margaret had authorized consulting payments from Hale Development to a company called V.C. Strategic Services.
Victor Crane's initials.
The payments totaled 2.8 million dollars.
Evelyn looked at Samuel.
"For what services?"
"None that I could ever identify."
Then Samuel turned to the final page.
The most recent payment had been made forty-eight hours before Lily was chained.
