The second paternity report should have frightened Evelyn.
Instead, it made her suspicious.
The numbers were too clean.
The timing was too perfect.
The test had appeared precisely when Daniel's custody argument began collapsing.
Maya requested the chain of custody immediately.
Victor objected to producing it that day.
Judge Warren gave him twenty-four hours.
Outside the courtroom, reporters waited behind the security line.
Daniel tried to approach Evelyn.
Maya stepped between them.
"All communication through counsel."
Daniel ignored her.
"Evelyn, I didn't know about the second test until last night."
"You didn't know your mother was going to chain Lily either, right?"
His face tightened.
"You heard the recording."
"Yes."
"Then you heard me tell her it was enough."
Evelyn stared at him.
"And then you gave permission."
"I was angry."
"She is six."
Daniel glanced toward the reporters.
"Keep your voice down."
That request told Evelyn exactly what still mattered most to him.
Reputation.
Not Lily.
Not truth.
Reputation.
That afternoon, an audio expert named Marcus Lee examined the bracelet.
He confirmed the file had not been edited after recording.
But he found something else.
The file was longer than the version they had heard.
The toy had created an index error that caused the final fourteen minutes to appear unreadable.
Marcus recovered them.
Evelyn, Maya, and Claire listened in his studio.
At first there was only movement and Lily's crying.
Then Margaret's voice returned.
"Stand still."
Lily sniffled.
"It hurts."
Daniel spoke from farther away.
"Loosen it, Mom."
"No."
"She's learned the lesson."
Margaret laughed softly.
"You still don't understand the lesson."
There was a long pause.
Then Daniel said, "I signed what you wanted."
Evelyn looked at Maya.
The recording continued.
Margaret lowered her voice.
"And tomorrow Victor files the trust challenge."
"If the second DNA test works, Lily is removed as beneficiary."
Daniel answered, "And my share?"
"Protected."
Evelyn felt her hands go numb.
This had never been only about paternity.
It was about money.
Margaret had used Lily as a piece in a financial dispute.
Then Daniel said something that made Claire stand up from her chair.
"What if Evelyn finds out the St. Anne's file was changed?"
Margaret replied without hesitation.
"Then Theresa takes the fall."
Maya paused the recording.
"Theresa Vale."
Evelyn nodded.
"The former clinic employee."
Marcus resumed the file.
Margaret's next words were almost a whisper.
"She has been paid enough to disappear."
The recording ended thirty seconds later.
Maya grabbed her phone.
"We find Theresa before Margaret does."
They were already too late.
When police arrived at Theresa Vale's listed apartment that evening, the door was open.
The furniture was gone.
