Chapter 4 - The Husband Who Stayed Silent.
Evelyn met Daniel in the parking lot of his law firm because she refused to step inside the home they had shared.
He arrived without a jacket, his tie loose, his face hollow from lack of sleep.
For half a second, he looked like the man she had once trusted.
Then Evelyn remembered Lily's chain.
She handed him a copy of the clinic authorization.
"Explain this."
Daniel stared at his own signature.
"Mom said she needed it for an insurance issue."
"You are an attorney."
"I didn't read the whole document."
"You signed a notarized authorization for my reproductive records without telling me."
"I made a mistake."
Evelyn shook her head.
"A mistake is forgetting milk."
"This was a choice."
Daniel looked toward the building as coworkers passed behind the glass lobby doors.
"Can we not do this here?"
"Lily didn't get privacy when your mother chained her outside."
His jaw tightened.
"You keep saying it like Mom tortured her."
Evelyn's anger became strangely calm.
"She put a chain around our daughter's body."
"And you knocked a sixty-four-year-old woman to the ground."
There it was again.
The same moral equation Daniel kept trying to invent.
Evelyn opened her tote bag and removed a second document.
It was a petition for temporary sole custody drafted that morning by Claire's attorney friend, Maya Torres.
Daniel's face changed immediately.
"You're taking Lily from me?"
"You watched."
"I didn't lock the chain."
"You watched."
He stepped closer.
"Evelyn, if you file that, my mother will release the video."
Evelyn stopped.
"What video?"
Daniel realized his mistake too late.
His eyes shifted away.
"Daniel."
"There are security cameras at the house."
"Good."
"Not good."
He swallowed.
"The patio camera shows you attacking Mom."
Evelyn almost smiled.
"It also shows Lily chained to the post."
"Not from that angle."
The smile vanished.
Daniel explained that the patio camera faced the sliding doors.
It captured Margaret stepping outside and Evelyn crossing the patio to slap her.
The porch pillar was beyond the edge of the frame.
There was no audio.
"Convenient," Evelyn said.
Daniel looked miserable.
"Mom's attorney says if you push the custody issue, they'll seek a restraining order and file assault charges."
Evelyn stared at him.
"Her attorney?"
"She retained someone this morning."
"And you know what he says because?"
Daniel did not answer.
A black SUV turned into the parking lot.
Margaret sat in the rear seat.
Beside her was a silver-haired man Evelyn recognized from Daniel's firm Christmas parties.
Victor Crane.
Senior partner.
Daniel's boss.
Margaret rolled down the window.
"You should take the deal, Evelyn."
Evelyn felt her pulse jump.
"What deal?"
Victor stepped out carrying a folder.
Inside was a proposed separation agreement.
Daniel would receive primary custody.
Evelyn would receive supervised visits.
In exchange, Margaret would decline to pursue criminal charges for the slap.
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
"You knew about this?"
His silence returned.
Margaret smiled.
"You have forty-eight hours."
Evelyn closed the folder.
"No."

"Then you should probably watch the news tonight."
