Chapter 3 - The Papers Margaret Wouldn't Read.

Evelyn spent that night at her sister Claire's apartment with Lily asleep beside her on the sofa.
The chain marks around Lily's waist had faded from angry red to pink, but Evelyn could still see them every time she closed her eyes.
Daniel called seventeen times.
She answered the eighteenth.
"What medical records?"
There was a long silence.
"Evelyn, come home and we'll talk."
"No."
"My mother is being questioned because you overreacted."
Evelyn almost laughed.
"Your daughter was chained to a building."
"It was for fifteen minutes."
The sentence ended the marriage before any lawyer ever would.
Evelyn lowered the phone.
Then she heard him say her name.
"The records were from St. Anne's."
She lifted the phone again.
St. Anne's was the fertility clinic Evelyn and Daniel had used after two years of failed pregnancies.
The treatment had ended when Evelyn conceived naturally, or so everyone had believed.
"What about them?"
Daniel exhaled.
"Mom found a file that said your insemination cycle wasn't canceled."
Evelyn frowned.
"It was canceled."
"The file listed a donor specimen."
Evelyn sat upright.
"That's impossible."
"I thought so too."
"Then why did you let your mother punish Lily?"
Another silence.
"Daniel?"
"Because the trust matters."
Evelyn felt colder than she had on the porch.
Daniel's grandfather had created a family trust worth nearly forty million dollars.
Daniel's share would transfer fully when he turned thirty-eight, but only if he had a biological heir recognized by the trust.
He was thirty-seven.
Lily was listed as that heir.
Margaret had always treated the trust like a family religion.
"So you thought Lily might not be yours, and instead of asking me, you let your mother chain her outside a party?"
"I was trying to get the truth."
Evelyn looked at the paternity report on the coffee table.
"I already got the truth."
"That test could be manipulated."
She went silent.
The report had been ordered through an accredited lab and witnessed by a nurse.
Daniel knew that.
"Who told you that?"
He did not answer.
"Your mother?"
Still nothing.
Evelyn ended the call.
The next morning she drove directly to St. Anne's with Claire watching Lily.
The clinic director, Dr. Nolan, disappeared into the records room for nearly twenty minutes.
When he returned, he carried no file.
"Mrs. Carter, your original fertility chart is missing."
"Missing?"
"The electronic record was altered six months ago."
Evelyn's stomach tightened.
"By whom?"
Dr. Nolan turned his monitor toward her.
The access log showed an administrative login.
The username belonged to a former clinic employee named Theresa Vale.
Evelyn had never heard the name.
Then Dr. Nolan opened the scanned visitor authorization attached to the login.
At the bottom was the name of the person who had requested access.
Margaret Hale.
Evelyn stared at the signature.
"Why would the clinic give her my records?"
Dr. Nolan looked deeply uncomfortable.
"They didn't."
He pointed to a second line beneath Margaret's name.
"Someone used your husband's notarized authorization."
Daniel had not merely believed Margaret's story.
He had helped her build it.
Then Evelyn noticed the date.
The authorization had been signed three weeks before Margaret first accused Lily of not being Daniel's child.

Whatever had happened on that porch had not been an impulsive act of cruelty.
It had been planned.
