Chapter 6 - The Custody Trap.

Maya replayed the recording three times without changing her expression.
Evelyn could not manage the same control.
On the fourth replay, Daniel's voice seemed even clearer.
"Fine."
"Put the chain on her."
There was a pause afterward.
Then Lily could be heard crying.
Daniel said something too faint to understand.
Margaret answered sharply.
"If she wants to behave like an outsider, she can stand outside."
Evelyn pressed both hands against her mouth.
Maya stopped the audio.
"This changes the custody case."
"It changes everything."
"Maybe."
Evelyn turned toward her.
"Maybe?"
Maya pointed to the bracelet.
"We have to authenticate it."
"That's Daniel's voice."
"I know."
"Lily knows."
"I know."
Maya leaned forward.
"But Margaret's lawyer will say it was edited, manipulated, or taken out of context."
Evelyn looked toward Lily, who had fallen asleep with her head on Claire's lap.
"How is chaining a six-year-old taken out of context?"
Maya had no answer that made the question less terrible.
The emergency custody hearing was scheduled for the next morning.
At nine fifteen, Evelyn entered family court carrying the bracelet inside an evidence bag.
Daniel sat across the aisle beside Victor Crane.
Margaret was behind them wearing a scarf that partially covered the bruise on her cheek.
She smiled when Evelyn looked over.
Judge Warren reviewed the filings in silence.
Then Victor stood.
He described Evelyn as volatile.
He described Margaret as an elderly victim.
He described the patio video as "unambiguous evidence of uncontrolled violence."
Maya rose next.
"Your Honor, the video is unambiguous only because someone deliberately removed the child who was chained just outside the frame."
The judge looked up.
"Chained?"
Victor objected immediately.
Maya placed police photographs on the screen.
The courtroom changed.
Daniel looked down.
Margaret did not.
Then Maya introduced the audio recording.
Victor attacked it before it was played.
He demanded forensic verification.
He suggested Lily had been coached.
Judge Warren allowed only a short portion pending authentication.
Daniel's recorded words filled the courtroom.
"Fine."
"Put the chain on her."
The judge stared at him.
"Mr. Carter, did you say that?"
Daniel's face had gone pale.
Victor leaned toward him and whispered.
Daniel swallowed.
"I don't remember the conversation clearly."
Evelyn almost stood up.
Maya touched her wrist under the table.
Judge Warren ordered that Lily remain temporarily with Evelyn.
Daniel would receive no unsupervised contact until the recording was examined.
For the first time in days, Evelyn felt air return to her lungs.
Then Victor stood again.
"Your Honor, there is an additional matter."
He handed the clerk a sealed envelope.
"We received laboratory results this morning from an independent sample."
Evelyn frowned.
"What sample?"
Victor continued.
"The test excludes Mr. Carter as Lily's biological father."
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
Evelyn stared at Daniel.
The first accredited test in her tote bag said 99.9998 percent.
This new test said zero.
Judge Warren looked from one report to the other.
"Someone is lying."
May you like
Margaret finally smiled.
And Evelyn realized that was exactly what Margaret had been waiting for.
