Chapter 13 - The Guest Who Lied.
The lake house contained no fingerprints that did not belong to maintenance workers, Victor, or members of the Hale family.
Whoever had taken Lily had cleaned carefully.
The camera beneath the table transmitted through a private cellular connection that shut down seconds after police discovered it.
Evelyn stood in the empty basement fighting the urge to scream.
Maya called from the city with an unexpected lead.
"Susan Bell wants to change her statement."
Susan was Margaret's neighbor and the first party guest who had stepped outside after Evelyn found Lily chained.
In her original police interview, Susan claimed she had not seen who placed Lily outside.
Now she wanted immunity before speaking again.
Evelyn returned to the city while police continued searching near the lake.
Susan met investigators at Maya's office.
She looked older than she had three days earlier.
"Margaret told us Lily had been stealing from the gift table," Susan began.
Evelyn stared at her.
"And you believed that justified a chain?"
Susan's eyes dropped.
"I didn't see the chain until later."
"You walked past the porch when you arrived."
Susan began crying.
Evelyn felt no sympathy.
"Tell the truth."
Susan admitted that Margaret had instructed guests to use the side entrance.
The children were told Lily was sick and could not attend the party.
Susan saw Lily through a window once and asked Daniel why she was outside.
Daniel said his mother was "proving a point."
But that was not the reason Susan had asked for immunity.
She had seen Victor at the party.
He entered through the garage twenty minutes before Evelyn arrived.
He carried a document envelope and spoke privately with Margaret in Richard's study.
Susan overheard part of their conversation.
"Victor said, 'The clean test is ready.'"
Maya leaned forward.
"The false paternity report."
Susan nodded.
Then she swallowed.
"Margaret asked what would happen if Evelyn refused the custody agreement."
Evelyn's hands went cold.
"What did he say?"
"He said they would use Plan B."
"What is Plan B?"
"I didn't know."
Susan hesitated.
"But Margaret said, 'She'll give up everything if she thinks the girl is gone.'"
Silence filled the room.
Officer Ramirez immediately asked why Susan had not reported this earlier.
Susan looked toward Evelyn with shame.
"Because Margaret paid my husband's medical debt last year."
Evelyn stared at her.
Another person purchased into silence.
Another adult who had decided Lily's suffering was less important than Margaret's money.
Then Susan added one final detail.
Victor had not left the party alone.
A woman drove him away in a dark SUV.
Susan recognized her because she had attended Hale family events years earlier.
Her name was Caroline Mercer.
Daniel reacted when he heard it.
"That's impossible."
Evelyn looked at him.
"Who is she?"
Daniel sat slowly.
"She was my mother's personal assistant when I was a kid."
"Why is that impossible?"
His voice became quiet.
"Because Mom told me Caroline died eighteen years ago."
Police searched the name.
Caroline Mercer was alive.
She owned a small private childcare transportation company two counties away.
Her company had access to school pickup systems and background-cleared drivers.
The photograph on her current business license matched the woman who had taken Lily.
Ramirez sent units to Caroline's address.
The house was empty.
But investigators found something taped beneath her kitchen table.
A recent photograph of Lily.
On the back, in Margaret's handwriting, were the words:
SHE LOOKS JUST LIKE HIM.
Daniel stared at the picture.
"Like who?"
No one answered.
Then Theresa, still on the phone with police, heard the description and whispered a name.
"Thomas Mercer."
Daniel turned toward the speaker.
Theresa continued.
"Caroline's brother."
"Margaret's old boyfriend."
The room went still.
Daniel finally understood.
