Chapter 8 - The House with Two Locks.
Theresa's message shifted the investigation in a direction Margaret had not expected.
If Theresa had not altered the fertility record, then someone else had used her credentials.
Officer Ramirez returned to St. Anne's with a warrant.
The clinic's archived security system had been scheduled to delete footage after six months.
The relevant night was five months and twenty-seven days earlier.
They had three days before it vanished automatically.
The video showed Theresa leaving the building at 6:04 p.m.
At 8:17 p.m., another person entered through an employee door using Theresa's badge.
The person's face was obscured by a hood.
But the camera captured a car in the parking lot.
A black Mercedes registered to Victor Crane.
Maya called Evelyn immediately.
"This is bigger than Margaret."
Evelyn looked at Lily across Claire's living room.
Her daughter was building a house from wooden blocks.
She had placed two tiny plastic locks on the front door.
Evelyn hated that detail more than she could explain.
That evening, Daniel sent a message through Maya asking to see Lily under supervision.
Maya expected Evelyn to refuse.
Evelyn agreed.
"Why?" Claire asked.
"Because I want to know what he does when he sees her."
The visit took place in a child services room with a social worker present.
Daniel entered carrying Lily's favorite stuffed rabbit.
For a moment, Lily stared at him from behind Evelyn's chair.
"Hi, bug," he said.
She did not move.
Daniel crouched.
"I brought Mr. Hops."
Lily looked at the rabbit.
Then she asked the question Evelyn had feared.
"Why did you let Grandma lock me?"
Daniel's expression collapsed.
"I made a terrible mistake."
"Did I do something bad?"
"No."
"Then why?"
Daniel began crying.
Not loudly.
Not theatrically.
He simply looked like a man finally seeing the size of what he had done.
"Because I was scared of losing something that never mattered as much as you."
Lily did not hug him.
She took the rabbit and returned to Evelyn.
The visit ended early.
As Daniel left, he slipped a folded note onto the table.
The social worker noticed it and handed it to Maya.
The note contained one sentence.
CHECK MY FATHER'S STUDY BEFORE MY MOTHER CLEANS IT OUT.
Daniel's father, Richard Hale, had died four years earlier.
His study remained untouched in Margaret's house because Margaret treated it like a shrine.
The police could not search it without probable cause tied to the current crimes.
But Daniel was still a legal co-owner of the property.
That night, under Maya's supervision, Daniel unlocked the front door for Evelyn and Officer Ramirez.
Margaret was staying at Victor's guesthouse.
The study smelled of cedar and dust.
There were two locks on Richard's old desk.
Daniel knew the first combination.
He did not know the second.
Evelyn searched the shelves.
Behind a framed photograph of Richard holding newborn Lily, she found a tiny brass key.
The second drawer opened.
Inside was a sealed envelope addressed in Richard's handwriting.
TO EVELYN - IF MARGARET EVER QUESTIONS LILY.
Evelyn's hands began to shake.
