Chapter 2 - The Party Behind Glass.

Daniel came through the sliding doors slowly, as though he were approaching a dangerous stranger instead of his wife.
"You hit my mother."
Evelyn pointed toward Lily.
"Your mother chained our daughter to a porch."
Daniel's eyes moved toward the child for barely a second.
Then he looked away.
That tiny movement chilled Evelyn more than Margaret's insult had.
"It wasn't supposed to be like this," Daniel said.
Evelyn stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret pushed herself upright, one hand pressed to her reddening cheek.
"Don't explain anything to her."
Evelyn walked back to Lily and crouched beside the lock.
"Where is the key?"
Margaret remained silent.
"Where is the key?"
One of the party guests, Margaret's neighbor Susan Bell, finally stepped outside.
Her face was pale.
"Margaret, give her the key."
Margaret's lips tightened.
"The child was having a tantrum."
Lily shook her head violently.
"I wasn't."
The words were small, but they cut through the patio like glass.
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"Mom, just give Evelyn the key."
Evelyn looked at him again.
"Just give me the key?"
Her voice dropped.
"You knew she was out here."
Daniel did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Evelyn grabbed her phone and called 911.
The transformation in Margaret was immediate.
The proud contempt vanished.
"Don't be ridiculous."
"My six-year-old daughter is chained to a post."
"It was discipline."
"Tell the police that."
Margaret turned to Daniel.
"Stop her."
Daniel stepped toward Evelyn.
She raised one hand.
"Do not touch me."
He stopped.
Sirens arrived seven minutes later.
To Evelyn, it felt like an hour.
A firefighter cut the chain while a police officer photographed Lily's red waist where the metal had rubbed against her cardigan.
Another officer separated Margaret from the guests.
Daniel kept repeating that it had all been a misunderstanding.
Evelyn listened in disbelief as the man she had married began building his mother's defense in real time.
Then Officer Ramirez asked Lily a simple question.
"Sweetheart, who put the chain around you?"
Lily looked toward Margaret.
Then toward Daniel.
Her lower lip trembled.
"Grandma locked it."
She swallowed.
"Daddy watched."
Daniel went completely still.
Evelyn felt the patio tilt beneath her.
"Lily," Daniel said quickly, "that's not what happened."
The officer lifted a hand.
"Sir, don't coach her."
Lily clung to Evelyn's neck.
"Daddy said Grandma only wanted me to learn."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
For months she had believed Margaret was poisoning her marriage from the outside.
She had never considered that Daniel had opened the door from within.
Officer Ramirez asked Evelyn whether she had somewhere safe to stay that night.
Before Evelyn could answer, Margaret laughed bitterly.
"Safe?"
She wiped blood from the corner of her mouth.
"Ask Evelyn where she was eleven months before that child was born."
Evelyn froze.
Daniel's face changed.
Margaret smiled.
May you like
"Go ahead, Daniel."
"Tell your wife what you found in her old medical records."
