Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.
The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,
casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.
Claire Bennett had chosen the private airport lounge because Ethan hated crowds before long flights.
She had arranged the car, confirmed the passports, upgraded the seats, and even remembered the charger he always forgot.
For ten years, marriage to Ethan had taught her to prepare for everything except humiliation delivered with a smile.
The lounge doors opened behind them just as Ethan checked his watch.
Madison Cole walked in pulling a silver roller suitcase.
Her blonde hair fell in polished waves over a short white travel dress, and her dark sunglasses stayed on even indoors.
She looked less like an employee arriving late and more like someone stepping into a plan already approved.
Claire slowly set down her coffee.
Ethan did not look surprised.
That was the first thing that frightened her.
Madison stopped beside him and rested one hand on her suitcase handle.
"I hope I didn't keep you waiting."
Claire looked from Madison to Ethan.
"Why would she be keeping us waiting?"
Ethan buttoned his navy jacket with irritating calm.
"She is coming with us."
The sentence landed harder because he said it like the weather.
Claire stared at him.
"To St. Lucia?"
"It's partly a work trip now."
Madison gave a small smile that disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared.
Claire knew that smile.
It was the expression of someone who believed the uncomfortable part belonged to somebody else.
Her phone vibrated against the white tablecloth.
A message had arrived from a number she did not recognize.
There was no greeting.
There was only a photograph.
Ethan and Madison sat shoulder to shoulder in a restaurant Claire had never seen, with Ethan's hand resting at Madison's waist.
Below the picture were four words.
"Ask about the suite."
Claire felt heat rise into her face, but she refused to give either of them the reaction they seemed prepared to manage.
She opened Ethan's shared travel folder on her phone.
The hotel reservation had been changed three days earlier.
Her name was still listed.
Madison's name had been added to the same villa category.
Claire looked up.
Ethan was watching her now.
"Whatever you're thinking, don't do this here."
Claire almost laughed.
He had brought his secretary into their anniversary trip and somehow she was the one creating a scene.
She stood and slid her passport from her beige handbag.
The gate announcement began in the distance.
Ethan reached for her arm, but she stepped back before he touched her.
"Claire, we board in twenty minutes."
She placed the passport wallet and printed boarding pass firmly against his chest.
"Cancel my ticket."
His confident expression finally cracked.
Madison's smile vanished.
Claire turned toward the lounge exit without asking a single question.
Behind her, Ethan called her name once.
She did not turn around.
Her phone vibrated again before she reached the elevator.
A second message appeared from the same unknown number.
"If you leave, check what he planned for Monday."
May you like
The elevator doors closed on Ethan's stunned face.
For the first time that morning, Claire understood that the woman in the photograph might not be the worst betrayal waiting for her.
