Claire's attorney arrived at the office just after sunset.
Rachel Lin had represented Bennett Meridian since its second year and knew the founders' agreement almost as well as Claire did.
She read the voting authorization without speaking.
Then she removed her glasses.
"If you did not sign this, we treat it as disputed immediately."
Claire nodded.
"What about Monday?"
"We notify the board that your participation remains active and that no transfer of voting authority is valid without independent verification."
Nora rotated the laptop toward Rachel.
"There is also the expense accusation."
Rachel read the spreadsheet.
The disputed transfers totaled enough money to look serious but not enough to trigger an automatic external audit.
That detail bothered Claire.
Whoever designed the accusation understood the company's controls.
Nora pulled the access log from the accounting platform.
Every questionable approval had occurred late at night from Claire's credential.
But the location data pointed to the home office network she shared with Ethan.
Claire remembered several evenings when Ethan offered to finish paperwork while she cooked or slept.
He knew her laptop password because, years earlier, neither of them believed marriage required walls.
"Change every credential," Rachel said.
Claire did.
Then Rachel asked whether Ethan had access to Claire's personal cloud storage.
The answer was yes.
That was where scanned copies of passports, signatures, and tax records had been stored for years.
Claire felt foolish for exactly three seconds.
Then she stopped.
Trust had not been a mistake.
Using trust as a tool had been his choice.
Nora opened Ethan's office with Claire's founder access.
The room was unusually clean.
His desk drawers were empty except for a set of old expense receipts.
Claire searched the cabinet near the window.
Behind a row of acquisition binders sat another blue folder.
Inside was a draft separation agreement.
Ethan proposed keeping the house, the consulting company, and voting control.
Claire would receive a fixed cash settlement based on a valuation from three years earlier.
Rachel let out a quiet, humorless laugh.
"He prepared for everything except you getting off the plane."
Claire turned another page.
A public relations memo described the separation as mutual and respectful.
Another page instructed staff not to contact Claire during her "personal leave."
At the bottom of the folder was a handwritten note in Ethan's blocky script.
"Board first, marriage second."
Claire photographed every page.
Her phone vibrated.
The unknown number had messaged again.
"You found the office copy."
Claire typed a reply for the first time.
"Who are you?"
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
A minute passed.
The answer finally arrived.
"Someone who was supposed to help him."
Claire looked at Nora.
"This person is inside the company."
Rachel's expression sharpened.
"Or traveling with Ethan."
Claire stared at the screen.
Madison was the obvious possibility, but the messages had begun before Madison appeared at the lounge.
Claire typed another question.
"Why warn me now?"
The response came immediately.
"Because Monday was never just about your marriage."
A final attachment followed.
It was an agenda for a private investor call scheduled thirty minutes after the board meeting.
The first bullet point read, "Confirm sole control of Bennett Meridian."
The second read, "Authorize sale discussion."
Claire's pulse quickened.
