Chapter 3 - Paradise on Decline.

By the time Ethan and Madison reached the resort, the Caribbean sky had turned gold above the palm trees.

The open-air lobby smelled of citrus, polished wood, and sea air.

Ethan had spent the flight pretending Claire's departure was a temporary tantrum.

He had told Madison that his wife always needed time to cool down.

Madison had believed him because believing him was easier than examining why she was there.

At the reception desk, Ethan smiled and placed a black travel card beside his passport.

The receptionist processed it once.

Her smile remained professional.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Bennett, that card isn't going through."

Ethan frowned.

"Run it again."

Madison glanced toward the ocean while the card failed a second time.

Ethan pulled out another card.

That one was declined before the receptionist could finish apologizing.

His phone vibrated.

A security notice filled the screen.

Travel spending access had been temporarily suspended pending verification by the primary account holder.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"She froze the accounts."

Madison turned toward him.

"Claire did?"

"Who else?"

He stepped away from the desk and called Claire.

No answer.

He called again.

No answer.

His irritation began to outgrow the calm performance he had maintained all day.

"Use the corporate card," Madison said quietly.

Ethan looked at her as if the answer should have been obvious to him first.

He pulled the company card from his wallet.

The receptionist processed it.

The screen showed another restriction.

Ethan's face changed.

That was not something Claire could have done alone.

He called Nora.

She answered immediately.

"Why is the corporate travel card blocked?"

Nora's voice was flat.

"Because the charge is personal until someone proves otherwise."

"This is a client development trip."

"Then send the client agenda and approval record."

Ethan looked at Madison.

There was no client agenda.

There was only a villa reservation, a private board plan, and a story he had expected nobody to challenge until Monday.

"Put Claire on the phone."

"Claire isn't with me."

Nora hung up.

Madison crossed her arms.

"You said this was handled."

"It is handled."

"We are standing in a lobby with three cards that don't work."

Ethan lowered his voice.

"Don't start."

The receptionist politely offered them a smaller room that could be secured with Madison's personal card.

Madison hesitated before handing it over.

For the first time, she wondered why Ethan, who had promised her a promotion after this trip, suddenly looked like a man losing access to more than money.

Her phone buzzed while Ethan argued about the villa deposit.

The message came from an internal Bennett Meridian email address she did not recognize.

"Check the blue folder in Ethan's carry-on."

Madison looked at the navy leather bag resting beside his suitcase.

A bright blue file tab was visible through the partially open zipper.

She looked back at Ethan.

He was too busy speaking to the hotel manager to notice.

Madison had spent months telling herself Claire was cold, controlling, and already halfway out of the marriage.

That was the version Ethan had given her.

Now someone was quietly placing pieces of another version in front of her.

She moved closer to the carry-on.

Then Ethan suddenly turned.

"What are you doing?"

Madison stopped with her hand inches from the zipper.

May you like

The warm lobby no longer felt like paradise.

It felt like a room where everyone except her already knew the ending.
