Chapter 2 - The Message Beneath the Message.

Claire did not cry in the elevator.
She watched the floor numbers descend and forced herself to breathe evenly.
By the time she reached the airport parking garage, shock had hardened into attention.
Ethan had always relied on her asking emotional questions before practical ones.
This time she decided to reverse the order.
She sat inside the waiting town car and reopened the unknown messages.
The photograph had been taken six nights earlier.
That was the same evening Ethan told her he was meeting a prospective investor downtown.
Claire opened the shared calendar for Bennett Meridian, the consulting company they had built together.
Monday was marked with a private board session Ethan had never mentioned.
The subject line read only "Leadership Continuity."
Claire stared at those two words until the driver asked whether she still wanted to go home.
"Take me to the office."
Her phone rang before the car left the garage.
Ethan's name filled the screen.
She declined the call.
He called again.
She declined it again.
Then a text arrived.
"You're embarrassing yourself over nothing."
Claire read it twice.
The old Claire might have answered immediately.
The new Claire took a screenshot and opened her banking app.
Their personal travel account showed three large pending charges from the resort.
A second card had been issued two weeks earlier.
She had never requested it.
Claire called the bank and verified her identity.
She did not close shared accounts or move money that was not solely hers.
She simply froze the travel cards issued under her authorization and placed a security review on new charges.
The representative confirmed that the cards could not be used until the review was complete.
Claire then called Nora Patel, Bennett Meridian's chief financial officer and the one executive Ethan routinely underestimated.
Nora answered on the second ring.
"Aren't you supposed to be on a plane?"
"I need you to tell me what Leadership Continuity means."
The silence on the other end lasted three seconds too long.
"Where are you?"
"On my way in."
Nora lowered her voice.
"Claire, Ethan told us you requested an indefinite leave after the anniversary trip."
Claire's grip tightened around the phone.
"I requested what?"
"He said there would be documents Monday."
The car moved into afternoon traffic while Claire watched airplanes rise beyond the highway.
One of them might soon carry Ethan and Madison toward the island that was supposed to celebrate ten years of marriage.
She suddenly understood why the timing mattered.
If she had boarded, she would have been six hours away and surrounded by ocean when the board received whatever Ethan had prepared.
"Nora, don't open anything he sent you until I get there."
"Claire, there is something else."
Nora sounded unsettled now.
"Yesterday, legal received a scanned authorization with your signature."
Claire stopped breathing for a moment.
"What authorization?"
"It gives Ethan temporary voting control over your founder shares while you're on leave."
Claire looked down at the passport wallet she had taken back before leaving the lounge.
Ethan thought she had handed him everything he needed.
He was wrong.
But as the car turned toward downtown, another message arrived from the unknown number.
This one contained no photograph.
It contained a file name.
"CM_Bennett_Signature_Final.png."

Someone had saved an image of her signature.
And someone wanted her to know it.
