Chapter 14 - What Ethan Knew at the Gate.
Ethan sat across from Claire in the attorney's conference suite with Rachel positioned near the door.
He looked at Rachel and gave a tired smile.
"So much for just us."
Claire did not react.
"Say what you came to say."
Ethan folded his hands.
He admitted the sale plan.
He admitted discussing Claire's temporary removal with Henry.
He admitted using old signature files and shared credentials to create documents he believed could be defended as administrative approvals.
Rachel stopped him immediately.
"Do not characterize disputed conduct as lawful."
Ethan nodded, but his eyes stayed on Claire.
"I convinced myself I was protecting what we built."
Claire almost laughed.
"By selling it without me?"
"By forcing a decision you would never make."
There it was.
The same idea beneath everything.
Ethan believed Claire's right to disagree became a problem he was entitled to solve.
He claimed Westbridge's first offer would not remain open forever.
He believed Claire was too attached to the company to consider selling.
He also believed their marriage had become a stalemate.
"And Madison?"
Ethan looked down.
"A mistake."
Claire's voice sharpened.
"She's a person, not a clerical error."
He flinched.
Then he explained the airport.
An hour before arriving at the lounge, Ethan received an anonymous email saying his document access had been discovered.
The message warned that Claire might already know.
He panicked.
He nearly canceled the entire trip.
Then Henry told him to continue because leaving suddenly would look suspicious.
"So when I walked away, you knew why?"
"I suspected."
"And you still boarded."
Ethan looked toward the window.
"I thought I could fix it from the resort."
Claire thought of the three declined cards and almost smiled at the absurdity.
He had expected control to survive distance.
Instead, distance exposed how little he actually had.
Ethan leaned forward.
"Claire, the company doesn't have to end us."
She stared at him.
"The company didn't end us."
He swallowed.
"I made terrible decisions."
"You made a system."
The sentence stopped him.
Claire listed it without raising her voice.
The hidden sale conversation.
The false leave announcement.
The scanned signature.
The manipulated expense trail.
The plan to use Madison as a fallback explanation.
The board chairman's side fee.
The anniversary trip used as both cover and evidence.
"That isn't one decision, Ethan."
He had no answer.
Claire slid a folder across the table.
Inside were proposed terms for an orderly separation of both marriage and management.
Ethan would step away from executive authority during the audit.
Any ownership resolution would follow the company agreement and independent valuation.
Their personal separation would proceed through counsel.
He opened the folder and stared at the first page.
"You already decided."
Claire shook her head.
"I decided at the airport that I wasn't getting on that plane."
She stood.
"Everything after that was you showing me why."
Ethan's phone buzzed on the table.
He ignored it.
Claire's phone buzzed at the same moment.
It was Felix.
The audit team had found one final scheduled file in Henry's archived account.
The file was timed to send after the board vote.
Its title was "Post-Close Leadership."
Claire opened it.
Ethan's promised advisory role lasted only six months.
After that, Westbridge planned to remove him too.
Claire turned the screen toward him.
