Chapter 8 - The Case Against Claire.

Monday morning arrived before Claire felt ready for it.
The emergency board meeting began at eight inside Bennett Meridian's largest conference room.
Claire sat beside Rachel and Nora while five directors joined in person and two appeared by video.
Ethan was still supposed to be in St. Lucia.
Instead, his face appeared on the wall screen from a hotel conference suite.
He wore a white shirt and the calm expression he used with clients who had not yet realized they were being cornered.
The board chair, Henry Walsh, opened the meeting.
"We have competing claims about governance documents and expense controls."
Ethan spoke first.
"My wife is upset about a personal misunderstanding and has responded by disrupting company operations."
Claire's hands remained folded on the table.
He continued.
"She froze legitimate travel spending and is now denying approvals she previously gave."
One director looked toward Claire.
"Did you approve the resort expense?"
"No."
Ethan lifted a document toward his camera.
"Her authorization profile says otherwise."
Rachel interrupted.
"That profile is under review because multiple approvals were entered from a shared home network."
Ethan smiled faintly.
"So now I'm responsible for where Claire logs in?"
Claire knew the board well enough to see uncertainty spreading around the table.
That was Ethan's strength.
He rarely needed to prove his version immediately.
He only needed to make the other version feel complicated.
Then he introduced the expense spreadsheet.
The room changed.
Several transactions appeared under Claire's credentials over six months.
They included resort deposits, consultant retainers, and a private car service.
Claire recognized none of them.
"I did not approve those."
Ethan gave a patient sigh.
"You can't simply deny every record you dislike."
The words made Claire's anger flare, but Rachel touched the edge of her notebook.
Stay factual.
Claire nodded once.
Nora presented login-location data.
Ethan countered that anyone in the Bennett home could have used the network.
Then he revealed his surprise.
An email from Claire's account appeared on the screen.
It was dated three weeks earlier.
"Ethan can handle all governance matters while I'm away."
Claire stared at it.
The email had been sent to Ethan and archived.
She had never written it.
Henry frowned.
"Claire, are you saying your account was compromised for weeks without your knowledge?"
The question sounded reasonable.
That made it dangerous.
"I'm saying the evidence needs forensic review."
Ethan leaned toward his camera.
"While that review happens, the company needs stability."
He asked the board to approve him as temporary sole managing director.
Two directors immediately supported the motion.
A third said he was leaning yes.
Claire felt the room tilting.
Then Nora's laptop pinged.
She looked down and went completely still.
Rachel noticed.
"What is it?"
Nora turned the screen toward Claire.
A new internal audit log had finished processing.
The fake email from Claire's account had not been sent from Claire's laptop.
It had been created from Ethan's office desktop.
The metadata showed the exact device identifier.
Claire looked up at the wall screen.
Ethan was still speaking.
He had no idea the ground beneath his story had just shifted.

But before Claire could interrupt him, the conference room door opened.
Madison stepped inside carrying the blue folder.
